We Are Quickened by God
Translation of several Hebrew and Greek words, quicken is the same as revive,
make alive, living, and gives life to, to recover life, restore and nourish up.
People are trying to change themselves, and as good as that sounds, it is
operating in the flesh. We have to yield ourselves to God and we are quickened by
His word (Psalms 119:25) “my soul clings to the dust, quicken You me according to
Your word”; (119:50) “this is my comfort in my affliction for Your word has
quickened me”; (119:154) “plead my cause, and deliver me; quicken me according
to Your word”. God’s word will show you His will and your need to be revived. As
Peter was witnessing on the day of Pentecost concerning Jesus, Peter’s words
convicted them deeply, and they asked what should they do?
We are quickened by His ways – testing and examining our ways in light of God’s
truth will show us when we need revival (Lamentations 3:40) “let us search and try
our ways, and turn again to the Lord Yahweh”. Psalms 119 shows this in many
verses (37) “turn away my eyes from beholding vanity, and quicken You me in Your
way”; (88) “quicken me after Your loving kindness so shall I keep the testimony of
Your mouth”; (156) “great are Your tender mercies, O Lord Yahweh, quicken me
according to Your judgments”. (143:10-11) “teach me to do Your will, for You are
my God, Your Spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. Quicken me, O
Lord Yahweh, for Your name’s sake; for Your righteousness sake bring my soul out
of trouble”.
We are quickened by the Father – (Isaiah 57:15) “for thus says the high and lofty
One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place,
with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the
humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones”. In prayer, ask God to revive
your heart and life (Psalms 80:18) “so will not we go back from You, quicken us,
and we will call upon Your name”; (85:6) “will You not revive us again, that Your
people may rejoice in You”. David cried out to God after his sin with Bathsheba in
Psalms 51:10 “create in me a clean heart, O God, renew a right spirit within me”.
Ephesians 2:1,5-6 says “and you has He quickened, who were dead in trespasses
and sins… Even when we were dead in sins, has quickened us together with Christ,
by grace you are saved. And has raised us up together, and made us sit together
in heavenly places in Christ Jesus”.
There is something we can do to help bring revival; if you are really serious about
wanting to return to the Lord, get rid of your foreign gods. Determine to obey only
the Lord. The Israelites are a good example for us. We read many times they fell
into sin, and when they would cry out to God and return to Him, He would restore
them. Seek God’s presence in your life, the Bible says seek Him and you shall find
Him, when you shall search for Him with all your heart.
We are quickened by the Son – (John 5:21) “for as the Father raises up the dead,
and makes them alive, even so the Son makes alive whom He will”. John 1:12-13
says “but as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on His name. Which were born, not of blood, nor of
the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God”. This is our new birth (John 3:
5-6) “Jesus answered, verily, verily, I say to you, except a man be born of water and
of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the
flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit”.
We are quickened by the Spirit – God grants revival through His Holy Spirit working
in our hearts and lives. Ephesians 5:18 – the filling of the Holy Spirit is to be a
continuing filling. The disciples were filled on the day of Pentecost and then when
they prayed for boldness to speak His word in spite of threatenings. I believe we all
should be as Jeremiah who said “then I said, I will not make mention of Him, nor
speak any more in His name. But His word was in my heart as a burning fire shut
up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing and I could not stay”. John 6:63
says “it is the Spirit that quickens, the flesh profits nothing, the words that I speak to
you, they are spirit and they are life”. In Romans 8:11 “but if the Spirit of Him that
raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead
shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwells in you”.
When you look at today’s church, you see the need for the church to be revived,
the devil has come in the door, and there are as many divorces in the church as in
the world, many are sick and dying from all kinds of diseases. The good news is
that Jesus said “the gates of hell shall not prevail against the church”. Paul tells
Timothy in II Timothy 1:6-7 “wherefore I put you in remembrance that you stir up the
gift of God, which is in you by the putting on of my hands. For God has not given
us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. Exercising
your spiritual gifts can help revive your life. Proverbs 4:20-23 says “My son, attend
to my words, incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes,
keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those that find them, and
health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the
issues of life”.
