Talk This Way

Scripture Reading:  Luke 11:1-13

1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His
disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
2 So He said to them,
“When you pray, say:

   Our Father in heaven,
   Hallowed be Your name.
   Your kingdom come.
   Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.”

5 And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to
him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I
have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me;
the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? 8 I
say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his
persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be
opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who
knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give
him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he
asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those
who ask Him!”

We talked two weeks ago about how we should walk in a way in keeping with the
Father’s will.  Today we’re going to be looking at how we can talk in the way God
would want us to talk.  In our scripture reading, the disciples had come to Jesus to
ask Him how to pray.  The things I want you to see with this prayer is not that you
should just memorize it and recite it over and over like some do.  But recognize the
style in which the Son goes before the Father.

First He properly honors and reverences God and His holy Name.  Then He makes
the point that it is God’s will that matters, not our own.  And it is the kingdom that is
most important, in that the earth should be made right so things can be as they are
in heaven.  Only after all this has been done does He ask for the basic needs of man
and not for some long period into the future, but only for one day.  The one thing He
asks for forever is the forgiveness of sin and that is not unconditional, as He makes
it contingent upon how we forgive others around us.  Finally, He asks for help and
deliverance so that we can walk uprightly.

He gives us a pattern to follow, not a rote prayer to memorize and regurgitate without
thought.  He reminds us that we would help a friend in trouble if he is persistent, and
that we would give good things to our children when they ask for things they need.
He stresses this so we can be confident that God our Father will be there for us
when we come to Him persistently and when we ask for good things that we need.
We can’t expect Him to give us things that will be bad for us, when we ask for them.
If Cameron asks me for a chainsaw I would say no.  Even if he really wants a
chainsaw, I would not give it to him because I know the dangers that would come with
it.  In the same way, if we ask for something that we think we want but He knows
would be bad for us, as our heavenly Parent He would be right to withhold it from us.
But the thing I want us all to get, is that we should be talking to Him.

Exodus 4:10-12
10 Then Moses said to the LORD, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You
have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”
11 So the LORD said to him, “
Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf,
the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the LORD? 12 Now therefore, go, and I will be with your
mouth and teach you what you shall say.”

We can’t be like Moses was when God first came to him.  Afraid of how he sounded.
Not confident in his speech.  Go is like, didn’t I make your mouth and now you’re
going to question me when I tell you to go and speak?   John the Baptist got the
point.

John 3:30-34
30 He must increase, but I must decrease. 31 He who comes from above is above all; he who
is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32
And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony. 33 He
who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. 34 For He whom God has sent
speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.

It’s not about me, it’s about You!  I must decrease.  If you’re born of the earth you’re
going to speak of the earth.  And if you come from God you are going to speak His
words.  That’s key for us to recognize because though we were born of earth, when
we accept Yeshua we are born again of heaven.  As John the Baptist said, we (our
flesh) must decrease as He (the Holy Spirit within us) must increase.

Galatians 5:17 - For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and
these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

It’s like a war is going on within ourselves for control.  What is going to control you;
your flesh or the Spirit of the Living God?  As Paul writes to the Galatians, the two
things are enemies of each other.  So, which will you follow?  Will you be of the earth
and speak like it or from heaven, and speak like it?

John 8:28-29
28 Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He,
and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. 29 And He
who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that
please Him.”

Yeshua tells us that He only does what He sees from the Father and only speaks
those things He has heard from the Father.  He does nothing of Himself but always
seeks to please the Father.  That is key in understanding the power in which He
dwelt.  When He spoke, His words had this power because His words were from God.

John 14:10-14
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also;
and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask
in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in
My name, I will do it.

We have got to learn to speak in God’s power and in His authority if we want to see
the great works done in our lives that Yeshua did in His.  If we follow the principles
put forth by Him, He tells us that anything we ask in His name He will do.  But
remember, that means that we are not asking for things in our will but in His and our
first concern is for the kingdom of heaven and that God be glorified.  If we can step
out of the place of selfishness and move in to the place of selflessness, we will have
overcome the flesh; completely crucified it.

1 Peter 3:13-17
13 And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14 But even if
you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their
threats, nor be troubled.” 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to
give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness
and fear; 16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who
revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 17 For it is better, if it is the will of God, to
suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

We must always be ready to speak for the kingdom sake.  We must conquer our fear
of speaking the word God gives to us.  So, how do we know what He wants us to say?

1 Corinthians 2:10-14
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes,
the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the
man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now
we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might
know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy
Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man does not
receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them,
because they are spiritually discerned.
