Spiritual Ears
Ears are an organ for hearing. Isaiah prophecies that Christ will open ears (Isaiah
35:4-5) “say to them that are of a fearful heart, be strong, fear not; behold your
God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; He will come and save
you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be
unstopped”.
We have a spiritual ear. Jesus said many times “he that has a ear, let him hear”
(Mark 4:23-24) “if any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And He said to them,
take heed what you hear, with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you,
and to you that hear shall more be given”; in the book of Revelation, as the angel of
the Lord wrote to the 7 churches and said this to them. He was not talking about
the natural ears on the sides of your head. You know how when you are traveling
and you are listening to the radio, when you get out of range that station will go off,
or become another station. The first station didn’t stop transmitting, you just got out
of range to hear.
We have to exercise hearing from God; before we are born again, we hear the
voice of our body and our mind, that’s why we must renew our mind. When we are
born again we have to train ourselves to hear the voice of our spirit. Romans 8:16
says “the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of
God”. God speaks to our spirit man and speaks in a still small voice. Our spirit man
has to be strong enough to hear. People feed their body three times a day and fed
their spirit man once a week, and wonder why they are not hearing from God. The
book of Proverbs gives sound advice on this. Proverbs 4:20-23 “my son, attend to
my words, incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes, keep
them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those that find them, and health
to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of
life”. Proverbs 5:1-2 says “my son, attend to my wisdom, and bow your ear to my
understanding. That you may regard discretion and that your lips may keep
knowledge”. Proverbs 8:32-34 says “now therefore hearken to me, O you children;
for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it
not. Blessed is the man that hears me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the
posts of my doors”. Proverbs 15:31-32 says “the ear that hears the reproof of life
abides among the wise. He that refuses instruction despises his own soul, but he
that hears reproof gets understanding”. Proverbs 18:15 says “the heart of the
prudent gets knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge”. The
responsibility of watching what we hear is ours. The Bible is suppose to be our final
authority. When we establish by two or three witnesses, the word of God, we can
apply it in our life, by speaking it out.
We should at all times hear the will of God; Jesus said “I am the good shepherd and
know My sheep, and am known of Mine. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them,
and they follow Me” (John 10:14, 27). Jesus said in (Matthew 13:16-19) “but
blessed are your eyes, for they see and your ears, for they hear. For verily, I say to
you, that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which
you see, and have not seen them, and to hear those things which you hear, and
have not heard them. Hear you therefore the parable of the sower. When any one
hears the word of the kingdom and understands it not, then comes the wicked one,
and catches away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed
by the way side”. It’s what your hear and understand that counts.
We are told to “walk by faith and not by sight”, and that “faith comes by hearing,
and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). If the word abides in you, faith is
there. Jesus said “if you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you can ask what
you want and it shall be done to you” (John 15:7). Since faith comes by hearing the
word of God, the more word you hear, and understand the more faith you will have;
and faith changes things.
We have an outer ear and inner ear. Your outer ear is what you hear other people
with, your inner ear is where you hear yourself. Your ears, nose and throat are
attached, when you hear what you say it gets into your heart. You remember how
you quoted the multiplication table out loud until you knew them by heart. Jesus
said “I speak to the world those things which I have heard of Him” (John 8:26b); and
of the Holy Spirit, He says “however, when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will
guide you into all truth; for He shall not speak of Himself, but whatsoever, He shall
hear, that shall He speak; and He will show you things to come” (John 16:13). The
Bible shows that Jesus and the Holy Spirit only spoke what They heard the Father
speak; so we are to be imitators of Jesus and dear children, so why don’t we hear
the word of God and them speak that only?
