Singleness of Your Eyes and Heart
Singleness means having an undivided purpose, having a total dedication and
commitment to God, of one heart, unity of mind, singleness to God. Having sincerity,
without dissimulation or self-seeking.
This is in line with God’s desire (II Chronicles 16:9) says “for the eyes of the Lord
Yahweh run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong in behalf of
them whose heart is perfect toward Him”. Proverbs 23:26 says “my son, give me your
heart, and let your eyes observe my ways”.
To achieve this you must look at yourself as the God of heaven sees you. Heaven
has declared you not guilty by the blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus has paid the price for
all your sins in full, and you have been reconciled back to God (II Corinthians 5:17-
21). Reconciled means restored back to your original state, having fellowship and
relationship with God as Adam had before the fall.
James warns us not to be double minded (James 1:5-8) says “if any of you lack
wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it
shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is
like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that
he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his
ways”. A double mind is one who believes the word of God, and then talks to the
contrary.
We are supposed to look in the mirror of life (that’s the Bible) and see what we look
like, according to how God sees us (James 1:22-25) “but be you doers of the word
and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word,
and not a doer, he is like to a man beholding his natural face in a mirror. For he
beholds himself, and goes his way, and immediately forgets what manner of man he
was. But whoso looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues therein, he being
not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deeds”.
Let’s keep our focus on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Jesus tells us in
(Matthew 6:22-23 and Luke 11:34-36) “the light of the body is the eye, therefore when
your eye is single, your whole body also is full of light, but when your eye is evil,, your
body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in you be not
darkness. If your whole body therefore is full of light, having no part dark, the whole
shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle does give you light”.
In II Corinthians 4:18 the Bible says “while we look not at the things which are seen,
but at the things which are not seen, for the things which are seen are temporal, but
the things which are not seen are eternal”.
We are told many times that “the just shall live by faith”, faith is believing the word of
God and acting upon that word. A lot of Christians are born again, but they haven
learned how to live. We have to live by the word of God. The Bible says “we have
been make the “righteousness of God in Christ”, and as we meditate on being
righteous, we will be. Remember Proverbs 23:7 says “as a man thinks in his heart, so
is he”. The problem is some people find it hard to believe, because they might have
made a mistake. They are focusing on what they did, instead of focusing on what
Jesus did. When we sin, we are to repent as stated in I John 1:9. God is faithful to
forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Proverbs 3:5-7 says “trust in the Lord Yahweh with all your heart, and lean not to your
own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your
paths. Be not wise in your own eyes, fear (reverence) the Lord Yahweh, and depart
from evil”. However, most people will try to figure out how things are going to happen,
yet Jesus says in Mark 4:26-29 “so is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast
seed into the ground. And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should
spring and grow up, he knows not how. For the earth brings forth fruit of itself, first
the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought
forth, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest is come”. Remember
Jesus said the seed is the word of God, and the ground is the heart of man. As we
sow the word of God in our heart, it will spring forth fruit.
God wants us to have singleness of eyes and hearts even when it seems unfair (
Ephesians 6:5-8, and Colossians 3:22-24) “servants, obey in all things your masters
according to the flesh, not with eye service, as men pleasers, but in singleness of
heart, fearing God. And whatsoever you do, do it heartily as to the Lord, and not to
men. Knowing that of the Lord you shall receive the reward of the inheritance, for you
serve the Lord Christ”.
Proverbs 22:9 says “he that has a bountiful eye shall be blessed, for he gives of his
bread to the poor”. A bountiful eye is an eye that looks right on, and their eyelids look
straight before them.
David prayed in Psalms 141:8-10 “my eyes are to You, O God the Lord, to You is my
trust, leave not my soul destitute. Keep me from the snares which they have laid for
me, and the gins of the workers of iniquity. Let the wicked fall into their own nets, until
that I will escape”. David is said to be a man after God’s own heart. David trusted
God and waited for God to avenge him.
Paul prayed for the church in Ephesians in chapter 1:17-19 “that God of our Lord
Jesus Christ, the Father of glory may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in
the knowledge of Him. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that you
may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His
inheritance in the saints. And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-
ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power”. This prayer can be
prayed for our families and others, as well as for ourselves.
The early church walked in singleness, they believed the word of God and acted on
that word and they did the things that Jesus said we would do.
After Peter preached on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41,46-47) says “then they that
gladly received his word were baptized and the same day these were added to them
about three thousand souls. And they continuing daily with one accord in the temple,
and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their food with gladness and
singleness of heart. Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord
added to the church daily such as should be saved”. It was said that they turned the
world upside down. Acts 4:13 says “now when they saw the boldness of Peter and
John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and
the took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. Even though we did not
walk with Jesus on this earth, we can be with Jesus through His word.
Let us come in agreement with the word of God, and walk in singleness of our eyes
and heart, turning away from self reliance, and putting our trust in Jesus Christ. Base
our lives on what God says we are, and what God says we have, and what God says
we can do. Remember that the word of God is the truth.
