Salt is Irritating

Scripture Reading:  Luke 14:25-35

25 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone
comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and
sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not
bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which of you, intending
to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to
finish it— 29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it
begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? 31 Or
what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider
whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty
thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and
asks conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he
has cannot be My disciple.

34 “Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? 35 It is
neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear,
let him hear!”

John 15:18-20
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were
of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I
chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I
said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will
also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.

John 17:14-19
14 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of
the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of
the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 As
You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I
sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Mark 13:9-13
9 “But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be
beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a
testimony to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11 But
when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what
you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who
speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his
child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 13
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be
saved.

Genesis 4:6-7
6 So the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance
fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the
door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

Matthew 5:43-48
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your
enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to
those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil
and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those
who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47
And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the
tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is
perfect.

Luke 6:27-35
27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28
bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who
strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your
cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from
him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 And just as you want men to
do to you, you also do to them likewise.
32 “But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love
those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is
that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you
hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to
receive as much back. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing
in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is
kind to the unthankful and evil.

Mark 5:11-13
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil
against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your
reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be
seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by
men.
