Let Your Light Shine

Jesus said in Matthew 5:13-16 “you are the salt of the earth, but if the salt have lose
its savor, wherewith shall it be salted?  It is therefore good for nothing, but to be cast
out, and to be trodden under foot of men.  You are the light of the world, a city that is
set on a hill cannot be hid.  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel;
but on a candlestick, and it gives light to all that are in the house.  Let your light so
shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which
is in heaven”.

Believers are to be salt and light.  Jesus uses two familiar and important elements of
everyday life, salt and light.  Salt is aseptic; it can prevent decay from occurring, it
also makes food more palatable to the taste.  And Jesus said “man shall not live by
bread alone, but by every word that precedes out of the mouth of God”.
Your Christian influence in the world, should be measured by your conformity to the
Beatitudes, is like that checks the spread of sin.  Jesus is warning believers not to
lose their Christian influence, their saltiness in this corrupt world.

Light does not shine to be seen, but to enable others to see.  We are to shine our
light so that others can see the Jesus in us.  Believers are taught to let their light
shine, in their homes, and elsewhere, to light the way to Jesus for their family and
others (I John 1:5-7) “this then is the message which we have heard of Him, and
declare to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.  If we say that we
have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth.  But if we
walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the
blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin”.

Remember that we are ambassadors for Christ.  As the king’s subjects, we are not to
withdraw from the world; we are in the world, but not of it.  Your light does not shine to
be seen, but that others may see Christ in you, and hunger and thirst after His
righteousness.

We being children of the King of kings, and Lord of lords, are not to lose our saltiness
or dim our light.  The world is in spiritual darkness, blinded by the power of the devil,
the prince of darkness (II Corinthians 4:4).  As we live close to Christ and reflect His
light; He is the Light of the world (John 8:12) “then spoke Jesus again to them, saying,
I am the light of the world, he that follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have
the light of life”.

Jesus says “the light of the body is the eye; therefore when your eye is single, your
whole body also is full of light; but when your eye is evil, your body also is full of
darkness.  Take heed therefore that the light which is in you be not darkness.  If your
whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of
light, as when the bright shining of a candle does give you light” (Luke 11:34-36).

Paul writes in Romans 13:12-14 “the night is far spent, the day is at hand; let us
therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.  Let us
walk honestly, as in the day, not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and
wantonness, not in strife and envying.  But put you on the Lord Jesus Christ, and
make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof”.

Good news Philippians 2:13-16a says “for it is God which works in you both to will and
to do of His good pleasure.  Do all things without murmurings and disputings.  That
you may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of
a crooked and perverse nation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.
Holding forth the word of life”.

David invited God to search him and see if there was any wicked way in him (Psalms
139:23-24) “search me, O God, and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts.
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”.  This
is a good prayer for us to pray.  We are told in the New Testament to examine
ourselves.

The book of Daniels is a good example of letting one’s light shine; in chapter 1 the
children of Judah were taken to Babylon, children in whom was no blemish, but well
favored, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding
science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they
might teach the learning and tongue of the Chaldeans.  Now among these were
Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; and the king appointed them a daily
provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank.  But Daniel purposed in
his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with
the wine which he drank.  And Daniel said “prove your servants, I beseech you, ten
days, and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink.  Then let our
countenances, be looked upon before you, and the countenance of the children that
eat of the portion of the king’s meat, and as you see, deal with your servants.  And at
the end of the ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all
the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.  Now at the end of the days
that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs
brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.  And the king communed with them; and
among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
therefore stood they before the king.  And in all matters of wisdom and
understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all
the magicians, astrologers that were in all his realm”.

In Daniel chapter 3  Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, and
commanded all that when you hear the sound of all kinds of music, you fall down and
worship the golden image, and whoso falls not down and worship that he should be
cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.  There was told the king that certain
Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abednego, have not regarded you, they serve not your gods, nor
worship the golden image which you have set up.  The king was furious and
commanded them to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and the king gave
them a second chance, but they refused and was cast into the burning fiery furnace,
and then the king looked in saw four men loosed with no hurt, and the fourth is like
the Son of God.  Because they refused to compromise, the king saw the light.  Then
Nebuchadnezzar spoke, and said, blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego, who has sent His angel, and delivered His servants that trusted in Him,
and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve
nor worship any god, except their own God.  therefore I make a decree, that every
people, nation, and language, which speak any thing amiss against the God of
Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be
make a dunghill, because there is no other God that can deliver after this sort”.

In Daniel chapter 6 when king Darius took the kingdom, he set Daniel over the princes
of his kingdom, and they plotted to find something against Daniel, but they could find
no fault, forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in
him; that is powerful when your enemies can’t find any fault with you.  They knew that
the only way to find anything against Daniel, was concerning the law of his God.   So
they got the king to establish a royal statute and to make a firm decree, that
whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save the king, shall
be cast into the den of lions.  When the king signed the writing and the decree, and
Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows
being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled down and prayed, three
times a day, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.  And they went to
the king and told him about Daniel, and because the thing could not change the
decree, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, could not be altered.  So
Daniel was thrown into the den of lions, and in the morning the king came to the den
to see if Daniel’s God had delivered him.  Daniel was released and the king
commanded that those men which had accused Daniel, and their families was cast
into the lions den and the lions killed them.  Then king Darius wrote to all people,
nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; peace be multiplied to you.  I make
a decree, that in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God
of Daniel; for He is the living God, and steadfast forever; and His kingdom that which
shall not be destroyed, and His dominion shall be even to the end.  He delivers and
rescues, and He works signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who has delivered
Daniel from the power of the lions”.  This is the second time that a pagan king had
recognized the true God, because of the light that His servant had shined.

Let us not forget Joseph, who was cast into a pit, and then sold as a slave.  Joseph
was sold in Egypt to Potiphar, and the Bible says, that Potiphar could see that Joseph’
s God was with him; and he made Joseph the ruler of his house, over all that he had
and he prospered in all that Joseph touched.  Even when his wife had lied on Joseph
and he was sent to jail, he didn’t murmur or complain, but he was put in charge over
the prison.  The butler of the pharaoh forgot Joseph after he had revealed the
meaning of his dream, until the pharaoh had a dream that no one could interpret, and
the butler remembered Joseph, and Joseph interpreted pharaoh’s dream and was
made the second in command over Egypt, because pharaoh knew that God was with
him.

Just like Jesus said when you let your light shine, people will glorify your Father in
heaven.
