Favor

Favor is defined as grace, merciful kindness, acceptable, blessed.  Psalms 5:12
says “For You Lord Yahweh, will bless the righteous, with favor will You compass
him as with a shield”.  And in Psalms 106:4-5 it says “remember me, O Lord
Yahweh, with the favor that You bear to Your people; O visit me with Your
salvation.  That I may see the good of Your chosen, that I may rejoice in the
gladness of Your nation, that I may glory with Your inheritance”.

Walking in God’s favor is walking in His blessings.  It’s the act of declaring favor
and goodness upon.  Many people have walked in the favor of God.

Abram left his fathers house and followed God, not knowing where he would go
(Genesis 12:1-3); he was later called Abraham and he believed God fully and
obtained the promised son (Isaac).  Abraham was visited by God (Genesis 18:1-
3) “and the Lord Yahweh appeared to him in the plains of Mamre, and he sat in
the tent door in the heat of the day.  And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo,
three men stood by him, and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the
tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground.  And said, my Lord, if now I
have found favor in your sight, pass not away, I pray you, from your servant”.

David was called a man after God’s own heart, and he walked in the favor of
God.  King Saul tried many times to kill David, but God’s favor covered him.
David writes in Psalms 20:1-2,5-8 “I will extol You, O Lord Yahweh; for You have
lifted me up, and have not made my foes to rejoice over me.  O Lord Yahweh my
God, I cried to You and You have healed me.  For His anger endures but for a
moment; in His favor is life; weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the
morning. And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.  Lord Yahweh, by
Your favor You have made my mountain to stand strong; you did hid Your face,
and I was troubled.  I cried to You, O Lord Yahweh; and to the Lord Yahweh, I
made supplication”.  Acts 7:46-47 shows us that David desired to built God a
house; it says “who found favor before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for
the God of Jacob.  But Solomon built Him an house”.

Joseph walked in favor with God.  Joseph was elevated to a place of favor
because of his faithfulness.  Wherever Joseph went God’s favor was with him;
he was sold as a slave, then accused falsely by his masters wife and put into
prison, yet the favor of God lifted him up to be the governor over Egypt (Acts 7:
9-10) “and the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt, but God
was with him.  And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and
wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over
Egypt and all his house”.

Gideon walked in the favor of God, the angel of the Lord visited him and called
him a mighty man of valor.  Gideon was called to deliver Israel from the hand of
the Midianites; and in (Judges 6:17) he says “and he said to Him, if now I have
found grace in Your sight, then show me a sign that You talk with me”.  After
Gideon established that God had talked with him, he yielded to God’s plan and
Israel was delivered, by 300 hundred men against Midianites’ army.

Daniel walked in the favor of God.  Daniel was one of the children of Israel which
had been taken to Babylon, and Daniel determined in his heart not to defile
himself with the king’s food (Daniel 1:9) says “now God had brought Daniel into
favor and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs”; Daniel requested to be
tested 10 days on vegetables and water, and the prince of the eunuchs
agreed.  And after the 10 days Daniel and the other three were found fairer
than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s food; verse 17 says
“as for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning
and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams”.  Again
Daniel refused to bow down when the decree was issued which said “that
whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save you, O
king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.  When he heard that the decree was
signed he went home and opened his windows and  prayed as was his custom
toward Jerusalem to his God.  Daniel was cast into the den of lions, but he was
not harmed, he told the king “my God has sent His angel, and has shut the lions’
mouths, that they have not hurt me; forasmuch as before Him innocency was
found in me; and also before you, O king, have I done no hurt (Daniel 6:22).
Daniel says in Daniel 11:32 “the people that do know their God shall be strong,
and do exploits”.

Proverbs teaches us how to find favor; in Proverbs 3:1-4 it says “my son, forget
not my law, but let your heart keep my commandments.  For length of days, and
long life, and peace, shall they add to you.  Let not mercy and truth forsake you;
bind them about your neck; write them upon the table of your heart.  So shall
you find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man”.  In
Proverbs 8:32-35 it says “now therefore hearken to me, O you children; for
blessed are they that keep my ways.  Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse
it not.  Blessed is the man that hears me, watching daily at my gates; waiting at
the posts of my doors.  For whoso finds me finds life, and shall obtain favor of
the Lord Yahweh”.  In Proverbs 11:27 it says “he that diligently seeks good
procures favor, but he that seeks mischief, it shall come to him”; and then in
Proverbs 12:2 it says “a good man obtains favor of the Lord Yahweh, but a man
of wicked devices will He condemn”.  Proverbs 14:9 says “fools make a mock at
sin; but among the righteous there is favor”.

The virgin Mary found favor with God (Luke 1:26-32,38) “and in the sixth month
of Elizabeth’s pregnancy the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of
Galilee, names Nazareth.  To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was
Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.  And the angel
came to her, and said, Hail, you that are highly favored, the Lord is with you,
blessed are you among women.  And when she saw him, she was troubled at his
saying and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the
angel said to her, fear not, Mary; for you have found favor with God.  And
behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call
His name Jesus.  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest;
and the Lord God shall give to Him the throne of His father David”; after finding
how it would be done, she answered “and Mary said, behold the handmaid of
the Lord; be it to me according to your word.  And the angel departed from
her”.  Now we know that the favor of God was upon her because in her days, if a
girl became pregnant they would be stoned to death.

Jesus walked in the favor of God, in Luke 2:46-49,52 it says “and it came to
pass, that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of
the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.  And all that heard
Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.  And when they saw
Him, they were amazed, and His mother said to Him, son, why have You thus
dealt with us? Behold, Your father and I have sought Yor sorrowing.  And He
said to them, how is it that you sought Me, knew you not that I must be about My
Father’s business.  And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor
with God and man”.

Jesus tells us how in the sermon on the mount (Matthew 5:3-12) “blessed are
the poor in spirit; for these is the kingdom of heaven.  blessed are they that
mourn; for they shall be comforted.  Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit
the earth.  Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for
they shall be filed.  Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.  Blessed are the
peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God.  Blessed are they
which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake; for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.  Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and
shall say all manner of evil against you falsely; for My sake.  Rejoice and be
exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the
prophets which were before you”.  Again in Luke 6:36,38 Jesus said “be you
therefore merciful; as your Father also is merciful.  Give, and it shall be given to
you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together; and running over,
shall men give into your bosom.  For with the same measure that you mete
withal it shall be measured to you again”.

Christians are called blessed.  Peter gives us all hope in I Peter 1:2-10
