Everything That Has Breath
Scripture Reading: Psalm 150
1 Praise the LORD!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
2 Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
5 Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD!
When hear the words ‘praise the LORD’ they usually think of very specific things.
Things like singing and raising your hands to heaven. But, praising God is much
more complex than that.
Genesis 29:35 - And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Now I will
praise the LORD.” Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she stopped
bearing.
The Hebrew word ‘Judah’ literally means praise.
Genesis 49:8-10
8 “ Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
Your father’s children shall bow down before you.
9 Judah is a lion’s whelp;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He bows down, he lies down as a lion;
And as a lion, who shall rouse him?
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor a lawgiver from between his feet,
Until Shiloh comes;
And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
The scepter does not depart from ‘praise’. We receive our power from praise!
And praise shall be the obedience of the people.
Psalm 50:22-23
22 “Now consider this, you who forget God,
Lest I tear you in pieces,
And there be none to deliver:
23 Whoever offers praise glorifies Me;
And to him who orders his conduct aright
I will show the salvation of God.”
Praise is that which brings glory to God. Those who conduct themselves
righteously will be shown His salvation.
Joshua 7:18-21
18 Then he brought his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the
son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
19 Now Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I beg you, give glory to the LORD God of
Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not
hide it from me.”
20 And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the
LORD God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 21 When I saw among the spoils
a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of
gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are,
hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”
You see, Joshua told Aichan that he would glorify God by doing the right thing and
confessing. I had never noticed that before. Even in his error he was able to
eventually praise God by doing the right thing. Praise brings glory.
2 Chronicles 5:11-14
11 And it came to pass when the priests came out of the Most Holy Place (for all
the priests who were present had sanctified themselves, without keeping to their
divisions), 12 and the Levites who were the singers, all those of Asaph and Heman
and Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, stood at the east end of the
altar, clothed in white linen, having cymbals, stringed instruments and harps, and
with them one hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets— 13 indeed it
came to pass, when the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound
to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD, and when they lifted up their voice
with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the LORD,
saying:
“For He is good,
For His mercy endures forever,”
that the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, 14 so that the
priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the
LORD filled the house of God.
They were praising God and the glory of God came and filled the temple.
Philippians 1:9-11
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and
all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you
may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the
fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
1 Peter 2:11-12
11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which
war against the soul, 12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that
when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which
they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Romans 15:8-9
8 Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the
truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers, 9 and that the Gentiles
might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written:
“ For this reason I will confess to You among the Gentiles,
And sing to Your name.”
Luke 5:23-26
23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and
walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to
forgive sins”—He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, arise, take up
your bed, and go to your house.”
25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and
departed to his own house, glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed, and they
glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things
today!”
Psalm 146:1-2
1 Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD, O my soul!
2 While I live I will praise the LORD;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
