Delight Yourself in the Lord
The Bible promises that if people take delight in the Lord, then God will give them
the desires of their heart (Psalms 37:3-6) says “trust in the Lord Yahweh, and do
good, so shall you dwell in the land, and verily you shall be fed. Delight yourself also
in the Lord Yahweh, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your
way to the Lord Yahweh, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. And He shall
bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your judgment as the noon day”.
When God is someone’s greatest desire, all that person’s other desires become
prioritized and then mirror God’s own desires for that person’s well being. As we
learn to love what God loves and hate what God hates, we are delighting in Him.
The Bible is the best source to see what delights the Lord Yahweh, lets look at some
of them (Psalms 1:1-3) “blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the
ungodly; nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his
delight is in the law of the Lord Yahweh, and in His law does he meditate day and
night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water; that brings forth its
fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall
prosper”. And then (Psalms 40:8) says “I delight to do Your will, O my God, and
Your law is within my heart”.
Psalms 112:1 and 119:16 says “I will delight myself in Your statutes, I will not forget
Your word”. Psalms 119:24,47,174 says “Your testimonies also are my delights,
and my counselors. I will delight myself in Your commandments, which I love. I long
for Your salvation, O Lord Yahweh, and Your law is my delight”.
As we review these, we see that the Lord Yahweh is delighted when we delight in His
testimonies, in His statutes, in His law and in His commandments. Remember the
Bible says “how can two walk together, less they be the same”.
There are rewards for delighting in the Lord Yahweh; In Isaiah 11:3 the Bible says
“his delight is in the reverence of the Lord Yahweh, and he shall not judge by the
sight of his eyes, nor decide by the hearing of his ears”. And Isaiah 58:58:2, 13-14
says “they seek Me daily, and delight to know My ways, as a nation that did
righteousness, and did not forsake the ordinance of their God. They ask of Me the
ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching God. If you turn away your
foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day; and call the
Sabbath a delight; the holy day of the Lord Yahweh honorable; and shall honor Him,
not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own
words. Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord Yahweh, and I will cause you to
ride on the high hills of the earth; and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your
father. The mouth of the Lord Yahweh has spoken”.
In Jeremiah 9:24 the Bible says “let him who glories glory in this, that he understands
and knows Me, that I am the Lord Yahweh; exercising loving kindness, judgment, and
righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight, says the Lord Yahweh”.
Remember Psalms 35:27 which says “let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favor
my righteous cause; yea, let them say continually, let the Lord Yahweh be magnified,
which has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant”.
Proverbs says “dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord Yahweh, but a just
weight is His delight” (11:1) “those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination
to the Lord Yahweh, but the blameless in their ways are His delight” (11:20) “lying
lips are an abomination to the Lord Yahweh, but those who deal truthfully are His
delight” (12:22) “the sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord Yahweh,
but the prayer of the upright is His delight” (15:8) “righteous lips are the delight of
kings, and they love him who speaks what is right”.
To desire is to long for, to want. Desire is a basic part of life, the important moral
issue is how one responds to his or her desires. We are to control our desires and
use them to serve our God appointed purposes. You can distinguish between good
desire and bad desire, by this; is a person’s desire self-centered or a desire for God’
Our desires should not go against what God desires. A sincere desire to please
God will result in an alignment of your desires with God’s desires (Psalms 97:10)
says “you who love the Lord Yahweh, hate evil! He protects the lives of His godly
people and rescues them from the power of the wicked”. We have to learn to love
God’s ways and hate evil in every form, not only the obvious sins, but also the
socially acceptable ones.
Jesus explains to us that when we “seek first the kingdom of God and His
righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33); and He
said this about taking thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall
drink, nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. As we place our desires on doing
the things of God, He will take care of us.
The Holy Spirit will reshape our desires to match God’s. If our hearts are not
changed, following God’s rules is unpleasant and difficult. We rebel against being
told how to live. The Holy Spirit, however, gives us new desires. He helps us want to
obey God (Philippians 2:12-15) “for it is God which works in you both to will and to
do of His good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputing. That you
may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a
crooked and perverse nation, among whom you shine as lights in the world”.
Remember we are to be the salt and light to the world.
With new hearts, we find that serving God is our greatest joy (Psalms 37:23) says
“the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord Yahweh, and He delights in his
way”. The good news is that it was God Himself, that gave us the new heart (Ezekiel
11-19-20) “and I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I
will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh. That
they may walk in My statures, and keep My ordinances, and do them, and they shall
be My people, and I will be their God”.
Paul said “I delight in the law of God according to the inward man” (Romans 7:22).
When you consider how much God loves us, He not only have redeemed us, He also
have made the way for us to live our lives in His plan and purposes. He wants the
best for us.
We can pray for God’s to help us do His will (Psalms 119:29-40) “remove from me
the way of lying and grant me Your law graciously. I have chosen the way of truth;
Your judgments have I laid before me. I have stuck to Your testimonies; O Lord
Yahweh, put me not to shame. I will run the way of Your commandments, when You
shall enlarge my heart. Teach me O Lord Yahweh, the way of Your statues; and I
shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; yea, I
shall observe it with my whole heart. Make me to go in the path of Your
commandments; for therein do I delight. Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and
not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken You
me in Your way. Establish Your word to Your servant, who is devoted to Your
reverence. Turn away my reproach which I fear; for Your judgments are good.
Behold, I have longed after Your precepts, quicken me in Your righteousness.
Let us stop trying to get the desires of our heart, by our own means, which can take
us away from the presence of God; and knowing how much God loves us, let us
believe His promises and turn to Him with our whole heart.
