Bruised for Our Iniquities (revised)

Scripture Reading:  Isaiah 53

1 Who has believed our report?
  And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
   2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
  And as a root out of dry ground.
  He has no form or comeliness;
  And when we see Him,
  There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
   3 He is despised and rejected by men,
  A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
  And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
  He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
   4 Surely He has borne our griefs
  And carried our sorrows;
  Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
  Smitten by God, and afflicted.
   5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
  He was bruised for our iniquities;
  The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
  And by His stripes we are healed.
   6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
  We have turned, every one, to his own way;
  And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
   7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
  Yet He opened not His mouth;
  He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
  And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
  So He opened not His mouth.
   8 He was taken from prison and from judgment,
  And who will declare His generation?
  For He was cut off from the land of the living;
  For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
   9 And they made His grave with the wicked—
  But with the rich at His death,
  Because He had done no violence,
  Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
   10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him;
  He has put Him to grief.
  When You make His soul an offering for sin,
  He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
  And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
   11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
  By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
  For He shall bear their iniquities.
   12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
  And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
  Because He poured out His soul unto death,
  And He was numbered with the transgressors,
  And He bore the sin of many,
  And made intercession for the transgressors.

These twelve verses pretty much say it all.  A few years ago I memorized this chapter
and as I did so I fell in love with it and even more so with my Savior.   This very
important chapter with all it’s words of prophecy, and for us fulfilled prophecy, has only
twelve verses.  Twelve is very significantly used when God is referring to His people.
Twelve tribes of Israel, twelve sons of Jacob, twelve apostles; and here are twelve
witnesses to Yeshua as Messiah.  I will look at each verse and show it’s fulfillment in
the Apostolic Scriptures.

Verse 1
John 20:24-29
24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when
Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the
Lord.”
So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put
my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not
believe.”
26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with
them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said,
“Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look
at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be
unbelieving, but believing.”
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him,
“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have
believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

You see, even one of the twelve did not believe.  If one that had walked with Jesus for
so long would have difficulty believing, then as Isaiah 53:1 says, “Who has believed
our report?  And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed.”  These were not
kings or priests or learned men.  They were common folks that we see are not at all
respected by the religious powers that be as you can see by their dealing in the book
of Acts.  They saw them as just a bunch of uneducated fishermen.  The religious men
figured why would God reveal Himself to them.  In fact, the Jews are still waiting for
someone to which the rabbis approve.  Though I see this first verse of Isaiah hinting
that would not be the case.  But you see at the end Jesus blesses all those who have
not seen but will believe.  That is us!  Jesus is blessing those of us who believe by faith
without having to physically touch His wounds.

Verse 2
Matthew 2:13-15
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to
Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee
to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young
Child to destroy Him.”
14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and
departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be
fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of
Egypt I called My Son.”

He is a tender plant, a young Child vulnerable to Herod’s sword, a flesh and blood
human baby.  Which is why the Lord directs Joseph to move to Egypt.  He is the root
coming out of dry ground, Egypt, which also fulfills another prophecy.  He is a regular
person, not particularly handsome, nothing so beautiful that would make us look at Him
and desire Him.

Verse 3
Mark 3:20-22
20 Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as
eat bread. 21 But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay
hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.”
22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebub,”
and, “By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.”

Matthew 13:54-57
54 When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue,
so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom
and these mighty works? 55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother
called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 And His
sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these
things?” 57 So they were offended at Him.
But Jesus said to them,
“A prophet is not without honor except in his own
country and in his own house.”

He was not esteemed by the learned men of power.  He was rejected by His own and
those from His own area were offended by Him.

Verse 4
Matthew 27:39-44
39 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads 40 and
saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself!
If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said,
42 “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let
Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. 43 He trusted in
God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of
God.’”
44 Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same
thing.

It appeared to those watching that God had abandoned Him, even stricken Him.

Verse 5
John 19:1-3
1 So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted a
crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 3
Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck Him with their hands.

Scourging doesn’t sound like too bad of a word but it was being beaten with a cat-of-
nine-tails which were leather straps with things like glass and nails and spikes on the
ends.  If you’ve ever been beaten with a belt, just imagine that times nine with things on
the end that will rip open your flesh.  The crown of thorn dug into His scalp and then,
according to the Matthew and Mark accounts, they took a reed and hit Him on the head
which would have dug the thorns in even deeper.   Yes, He was wounded, He was
bruised but not for anything He’d done; for our sin and iniquity He went through this.
The payment that bought our peace He paid with His flesh and blood, and the stripes
of the cat-of-nine-tails brought us healing.

Verse 6
Romans 3:10-12 & 23
10 As it is written:
  “ There is none righteous, no, not one;
   11 There is none who understands;
  There is none who seeks after God.
   12 They have all turned aside;
  They have together become unprofitable;
  There is none who does good, no, not one.”
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

Every one has turned away to sin.  None is righteous.  He has had all that iniquity laid
on Him.

Verse 7
Matthew 27:12-14
12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He
answered nothing.
13 Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify
against You?” 14 But He answered him not one word, so that the governor
marveled greatly.

What innocent man is not going to defend Himself against lies.  All He had to say was
that He did not encourage people not to pay taxes.  In fact, He could have asked to
see a coin and asked whose face was on it.  He had already told His disciples to render
unto Caesar what was Caesar’s.  If He was only a man, He could have saved Himself,
but that was not what He had come to do.  He had come to do more than save Himself,
He had come to save us all!  He had to be our Passover Lamb.  What lamb is going to
speak as it is being led to the slaughter?

Verse 8
John 19:13-16
13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat
down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in
Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and
about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”
15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”
16 Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and
led Him away.

He was cut off which to a Jew means to die without children.   He was taken from
prison, from the judgment seat, to be stricken because the people of God
transgressed.  Sure it had to happen, but from their position they messed up and there
will be a day when they recognize that they crucified Messiah.  Zechariah 12:10 speaks
of a time when the House of David will recognize the One they have pierced, and will
mourn and weep bitterly over Him like you would over an only Son, a firstborn son.
When they realize what was done to Messiah, there will be an overflow of sorrow in
Israel.

Verse 9
Mark 15:27-28
27 With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on
His left. 28 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered
with the transgressors.”

Matthew 27:57-60
57 Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea,
named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man
went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the
body to be given to him. 59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it
in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of
the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and
departed.

So as He was dying His grave was with the wicked but after He was dead it was with the
rich because He was buried by two leading men of Israel in a rich man’s tomb.

Verse 10
Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity
  Between you and the woman,
  And between your seed and her Seed;
  He shall bruise your head,
  And you shall bruise His heel.

You may wonder why it says that God will be pleased to put these things on Him, but
when you realize that Jesus is the Seed He was referring to back in Genesis 3, the One
that would crush the head of the serpent, it makes sense.  He was not pleased
because His Son had to go through all this.  But He was pleased because it was
finished.  The Seed promised to the woman in the garden had come and had crushed
the enemy’s head.

Verse 11
John 21:15-17
15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son
of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”
He said to him,
“Feed My lambs.”
16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love
Me?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”
He said to him,
“Tend My sheep.”
17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”
Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time,
“Do you love Me?”
And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”
Jesus said to him,
“Feed My sheep.

Jesus saw the labor of His soul.  He saw all those who would come to Him and counted
us worthy to go through all this for our sakes. He first says to Peter ‘Feed My lambs.”
Lambs are babies and signify us as babes in Christ when we first come to Him.  Then
He says, “Tend My sheep.”  This implies growth into maturity, and signifies us as we
mature in Christ.  Watch over the sheep.  Then He says, “Feed My sheep.”  Sheep eat
differently than lambs.  Just like babies eat differently than a grown man.  We as we
mature in Christ have to be willing to change our Bible studies habits.  We have to
move from the baby food of the Word, onto the meat and potatoes.

Verse 12
Revelation 19:11-16
11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on
him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes
war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns.
He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed
with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And
the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on
white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He
should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He
Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16
And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:

  KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

God has granted Him an exalted place and a name that is above all other names, and
He has also made intercession for us who believe on Him and call Him Savior and Lord.
Praise God!

John 14:1-6, He has risen!  The tomb is empty!  He is busy preparing a place for us.
We must get busy preparing ourselves and others for the journey.  As Yeshua told
Peter, feed my lambs, tend my sheep, and feed my sheep.  There are so many baby
believers that need to be feed with the pure milk of God’s word.  There are those who
are maturing that need to be prayed over and encouraged in the faith.  The enemy
comes very hard against this group and far too many fall away.  And unfortunately,
there are those who have matured but have still not graduated to more solid food.
