Your Heart

I am talking about your spiritual heart.  It’s the hidden self, which is fully known to
God (Jeremiah 17:10, Luke 9:47, Romans 8:27).  The heart is the seat of our
knowledge of God (II Corinthians 4:6) “for God who commanded the light to shine out
of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory
of God in the face of Jesus Christ”.  The state of the heart governs the vision of God
(Matthew 5:8) “blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. From the heart
one speaks to God (Psalms 27:8) “when You said, seek you My face, my heart said
to You, Your face, Lord Yahweh will I seek”.

What is in your heart?  It’s important to know the state of your heart (I Chronicles 28:
9) “and you, Solomon my son, know you the God of your father, and serve Him with
a perfect heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord Yahweh searches all hearts, and
understands all the imaginations of the thoughts if you seek Him, He will be found of
you, but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever”.

The Bible tells us what should be in our hearts (Deuteronomy 11:18-19) “therefore
shall you lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a
sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.  And you
shall teach them your children, speaking to them when you sit in your house, and
when you walk by the way, when you lay down, and when you rise up”.  David says in
Psalms 40:8 “I delight to do Your will, O my God yea, Your law is within my heart”.  In
Psalms 119:11 the Psalmist said “Your word have I hid in my heart, that I might not
sin against You”.

God test us to see what is in our heart, remember He tested the Israelites
(Deuteronomy 8:2) “and you shall remember all the way which the Lord Yahweh your
God led you these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, and to prove you, to
know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not”.

Solomon prayed for an understanding heart (I King 3:9) “give therefore Your servant
an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and
bad, for who is able to judge this Your so great a people?”  in verse 12 we see God’s
response was “behold, I have done according to your words, lo, I have given you a
wise and an understanding heart so that there was none like you before you, neither
after you shall any arise like to you”.  David said in Psalms 19:14 “let the words of my
mouth, and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord Yahweh,
my strength and my redeemer”.

Jesus says that we speak out of the abundance of our heart (Matthew 12:33-35)
“either make the tree good, and its fruit good or else make the tree corrupt, and its
fruit corrupt, for the tree is known by its fruit.  O generation of vipers, how can you
being evil, speak good things?  For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth
speaks.  A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things,
and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things”.  It’s our
responsibility to build the treasure of our heart, you build good treasure by hiding
the word of God in your heart.

We are told to guard our heart and tells us how (Proverbs 4:20-23) “My son, attend
to my words, incline your ear to my sayings.  Let them not depart from your eyes,
keep them in the midst of your heart.  For they are life to those that find them, and
health to all their flesh.  Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues
of life”.  Proverbs 23:7 confirms this, it says “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he”.
In Proverbs 4 verse 4b it says “let your heart retain my words, keep my
commandments, and live”. Proverbs 23:19 says “hear you, my son, and be wise, and
guide your heart in the way”.  The best way to guard your heart is showed in
Proverbs 23:26 which says “My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe
my ways”.

We guard our hearts because, we have an enemy (Matthew 13:19) says “when any
one hears the word of the kingdom, and understands it not, then comes the wicked
one, and catches away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received
seed by the way side”.  We are told to “be careful for nothing, but in every thing by
prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and
minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Look at what happened to Lucifer, when he let his heart be lifted up (Isaiah 16:12-
15) “how are you fallen from heaven O Lucifer, son of the morning, how are you cut
down to the ground, which did weaken the nations.  For you have said in your heart,
I will ascend into haven, I will exalt my throne above the starts of God, I will sit also
upon the mount of the congregation in the sides of the north.  I will ascent above the
heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.  Yet, you shall be brought down to
hell, o the sides of the pit”.

Where is your heart?  Jesus says in Matthew 6:19-21 “lay not up for yourselves
treasures upon earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break
through and steal.  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither
moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.  For
where your treasures is, there will your heart be also”.  When one’s heart is turned
toward God, He promises to make it sensitive to divine things, renewed and purified
(Ezekiel 36:25-27) “ then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean
from all your filthiness,  and from all your idols will I cleanse you.  A new heart also
will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you and I will take away the stony heart
out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.  And I will put My Spirit within
you, and cause you to walk in My statues, and you shall keep My judgments, and do
them”.  The heart is the place of divine indwelling (Galatians 4:6); such
transformation involves believing the gospel from a honest and good heart. That
provides fruitful soil for the word of God (Luke 8:15) “but that on the good ground
are they, which in an honest and good hearts, having heard the word, keep it, and
brings forth fruit with patience”. The true heart draws near to God, and James 4:8
says “draw near to God and He will draw near to you”.  Hebrews 10:22-23 says “let
us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled
from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.  Let us hold fast the
profession of our faith without wavering, for He is faithful that promised”.

We are told to apply our hearts (Proverbs 22:17-18) “bow down your ear, and hear
the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge.  For it is a pleasant
thing if you keep them within you, they shall with be fitted in your lips”.  And Proverbs
23:12 says “apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of
knowledge”.

We are warned not to harden our hearts (Hebrews 3:7-12) “wherefore as the Holy
Spirit says, today if you will hear His voice. Harden not your hearts, as in the
provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness.  When your fathers tempted
Me, proved Me, and saw My works forty years.  Wherefore I was grieved with that
generation and said.  They do always err in their heart, and they have not known My
ways.  So I swear in My wrath, they shall not enter into My rest.  Take heed,
brethren, less there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the
living God”.
