The Word is the Seed
At the end of the flood, as Noah and his family was leaving the ark, God made a
promise and in Genesis 8:21b-22 “I will not again curse the ground any more for
man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I
again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. While the earth remains,
seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and
night shall not cease”. Everything grows from seed.
God told Joshua in Joshua 1:8-9 “this book of the law shall not depart out of your
mouth, but you shall meditate therein day and night that you may observe to do
according to all that is written therein; for then you shall make your way
prosperous, and then you shall have good success. Have not I commanded you?
Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed; for the
Lord Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go”. This book of the law is the
word of God, actually at this point God was talking about the first five books of the
Bible. We today have sixty six books that make up the Bible; and it constitutes the
word of God.
The Psalmist says in Psalms 119:9-17 “wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his
way? By taking heed thereto according to Your word. With my whole heart have I
sought you; O let me not wander from Your commandments. Your word have I hid
in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Blessed are You, O Lord Yahweh,
teach me Your statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of Your
mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as much as in all riches. I
will meditate in Your precepts, and have respect to Your ways. I will delight myself
in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word. Deal bountifully with Your servant that
I may live; and keep Your word”. The psalmist understood the importance of the
word of God.
Proverbs chapter four says in verses 1-2 “hear you children, the instruction of a
father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake
you not my law”. The writer continues in verses 4b-10 “let your heart retain my
words; keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom, get understanding; forget
it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall
preserve you; love her, and she shall keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing;
therefore get wisdom, and with all your getting get understanding. Exalt her, and
she shall promote you; she shall bring you to honor, when you do embrace her.
She shall give to your head an ornament of grace; a crown of glory shall she
deliver to you. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of your life
shall be many”. Now listen to verses 13, 20-24 which says “take fast hold of
instruction; let her not go; keep her; for she is your life. My son, attend to my
words; incline you4r ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes; keep
them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those that find them, and
health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the
issues of life. Put away from you a forward mouth; and perverse lips put far from
you”.
Let’s take some time to meditate on Proverbs chapter 4, we are told to retain the
words of God and live; and not to decline from the words of his mouth. We are
told that wisdom is the principal thing, and we know that wisdom comes from the
word of God. we are told to attend to his words and incline our ear to his sayings;
to keep our eyes on the word of God; that the word of God is life to everyone that
finds it and health of all our flesh.
In Jesus’ explanation of the parable of the sower, He says in Luke 8:11-15 “now
the parable is this; the seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they
that hear; then comes the devil, and takes away the word out of their hearts, less
they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they
hear, receive the word with joy, and these have no root, which for a while believe,
and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they,
which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and
pleasures of this life, and brings no fruit to perfection. But that on the good
ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep
it, and bring forth fruit with patience”. We have to plant the word of God in our
hearts and as it grows our life will change.
He further explains to Martha in Luke 10:38-42 “now it came to pass, as they went;
that He entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha
received Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at
Jesus’ feet, and heard His word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving,
and came to Him, and said, Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to
serve alone? Bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said
to her, Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things. But one
thing is needful; and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken
away from her”. Martha was physically serving God with natural things, but Mary
was feeding on the word of God; and Jesus said that, that one thing was needful.
Jesus instructs us in the importance of hearing and doing what His words says
(Matthew 7:24-27) “therefore, whosoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does
them, I will liken him to a wise man, which built his house upon a rock. And the
rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that
house; and it fell not for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that hears
these sayings of Mine, and does them not, shall be likened to a foolish man, which
built his house upon the sand. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and
the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell and great was the fall of it”.
Jesus tells us in John 6:63 that “it is the Spirit that quickens; the flesh profits
nothing; the words that I speak to you, they are Spirit and they are life”. When we
speak the words of God, we are speaking life into our circumstances (Proverbs 18:
20-21) “a man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the
increase of his lips shall he be filled. Death and life are in the power of the
tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof”.
Jesus says in Matthew 12:34-37 “O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil,
speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart he mouth speaks. A
good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things; and an
evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you, that
every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of
judgment. For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall
be condemned”. We have to be careful whose words we are speaking.
Now lets look at what He says in Luke 6:45-49 “a good man out of the good
treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good, and an evil man out of the
evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil; for of the abundance of the
heart his mouth speaks. And why call you Me, Lord, Lord and do not the things
which I say? Whosoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings, and does them, I
will show you to whom he is like. He is like a man which built an house, and dig
deep, and laid the foundation on a rock; and when the flood arose, the stream
beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it; for it was founded upon
a rock. But he that hears, and does not, is like a man that without a foundation
built a house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and
immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great”.
James confirms that we must hears and then do the word of God (James 1:22-25)
“but be you doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his
natural face in a glass. For he beholds himself, and goes his way, and
immediately forgets what manner of man he was. But whoso looks into the perfect
law of liberty (the Bible), and continues therein, he being not a forgetful hearer,
but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed”.
Examine yourself to see if you are a doer of the word, Jesus tells us to forgive
(Matthew 5:23-24) “therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there
remember that your brother has anything against you. Leave there your gift
before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then
come and offer your gift”. He tells us to pray for those who hurt you (Matthew 5:
44-45) “but I say to you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to
them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute
you. That you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven; for He
makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and
on the unjust”. These things in the nature are impossible for us to do, but as we
make a determination to be a doer of the word, and then began to do it by faith.
You can choose by faith to be obedient to the word of God. Remember the
psalmist of Psalms 119 said “I have hid Your word in my heart, that I not sin
against You”.
Many will tell you that you don’t have to read or meditate on the word of God, and
that is true, you don’t have to be saved, you are saved by what Jesus did on the
cross. Yet when you read the word of God and meditate on it, you are filling
yourself up on the word, and the word is seed. Jesus says in Mark 4:26-29 “and
He said, so is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground.
And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow
up, he knows not how. For the earth brings forth fruit of itself; first the blade, then
the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth,
immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest is come”. Many people
believe that they have to know how God is doing His work, but the scriptures says
“he knows not how”, you don’t have to know how it works, just by faith plant the
seed.
