Witness – solemn affirmation; testifies to the truth, a person who gives
testimony; where there is considerable concern for the truth of the testimony.
A witness can be a guarantee of the accuracy of a transaction (Jer 32:10, 12,
25, 44)
In addition witness is also used in connection with the distinctively religious
message of the Bible, The Old testament prophets often pictured God either as
bearing witness against Israel (Micah 1:2) or as challenging Israel to bear
witness against Him (Micah 6:3). God is also seen in the Old Testament as
witnessing covenants between individuals (Gen 31:48-:50) as well as covenants
between Himself and the nation of Israel or individuals (Deut 31:19-26). God
witnesses to the believer about His assurance of salvation. “The Spirit Himself
bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Rom 8:16).
We can witness with our life style. The believer’s life and word also serve as a
witness to the world. (Luke 24:6-10; 34-48).
God tells us in Ex 20:16, Deut 17:6, Prov 25:18, not to bear false witness, so
what we witness must be the truth.
Witnessing got a bad rap when the Jehovah witnesses invaded peoples’ space
and time, but we have been commissioned by Jesus to witness (Math 28:19,
20). The Bible calls us wise when we do (Prov 11:30).
The command to witness in Acts 1:8; 5:32; 10:39, 41; 26:16 has implications for
all believers. When we witness we should always pray first for guidance, like it
said in Acts 1:8 wait for the Holy Spirit. It applies to the new Christian
community, the similar command that was given to ancient Israel (Isa 43:10, 12;
44:6-8). The believer’s model in witnessing is none other than Christ Himself
(John 8:18, I Tim 6:13, Rev. 1:4-7).
Some people don’t witness because they think that they have to know the whole
bible and are afraid someone might ask them something that they don’t know,
but the best way to witness is to tell what the Lord has done in (your) life. We
overcome the devil with this (Rev 12:11).
Witnessing is a form of worship, in that we are recognizing God for what He has
done in our lives as we tell others; praising Him. (Ps 26:7, Mark 5:19-20)
I was drafted as a witness when I was crying out to God. After hearing that He
wanted me to witness to my sister, who was a Jehovah witness, I cried even
louder. You see we had been going over scriptures for several weeks and not
really getting anywhere. I told the Lord that I didn’t think we were getting
anywhere like this and I asked Him to show me how to do it and I heard God
speak several words to me and I wrote them down and began to study each
word from Genesis through Revelations and the study showed that the Father,
Son and the Holy Spirit all shared commonly in these words, even though the
Bible states that there is only one. As you continue to study these words (See
Witnessing for non Christians) as God spoke them to me and you will see by
the Bible that Father, Son and the Holy Spirit are One together. This same
witnessing can be applied to any one who have not taken Christ as their Lord
and Savior; yielding their life to Him. Some people have a problem with the
Trinity, thinking we have 3 Gods, this study show we have only One God.
