What Causes Curses?

All through out the Bible, we see that disobedience always brings forth curses.
Starting with Adam and Eve, they disobeyed God as He commanded them not to eat
of the tree of good and evil, and the curse came upon them (Genesis 3:14-19) “and
the Lord God said to the serpent, because you have done this you are cursed above
all cattle, and above every beast of the field, upon your belly shall you go, and dust
shall you eat all the days of your life.  And I will put enmity between you and the
woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head and you shall
bruise his heel.  To the woman He said, I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your
conception, in sorrow you shall bring forth children, and your desire shall be to your
husband; and he shall rule over you.  And to Adam He said, because you have
hearkened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I
commanded you, saying, you shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground for your sake;
in sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of your life.  Thorns also and thistles shall it
bring forth to you, and you shall eat the herb of the field.  In the sweat of your face
shall you eat bread, till you return to the ground; for out of it were you taken; for dust
you are, and to dust shall you return”.

The psalmist says in Psalms 119:21-22 “You have rebuked the proud that are
cursed, which do err from Your commandments.  Remove from me reproach and
contempt; for I have kept Your testimonies”.

In Proverbs 3:29-33 it says “devise not evil against your neighbor, seeing he dwells
securely by you.  Strive not with a man with out cause, if he have done you no harm.
Envy you not the oppressor; and choose none of his ways.  For the forward is
abomination to the Lord Yahweh; but His secret is with the righteous.  The curse of
the Lord Yahweh is in the house of the wicked; but He blesses the habitation of the
just”.

Many a time the Israelites did evil in God’s sight and God lifted His hand of protection
and the curse fell upon them (II Chronicles 12:1-8) “and it came to pass, when
Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook
the law of the Lord Yahweh, and all Israel with him.  And it came to pass that in the
fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem,
because they had transgressed against the Lord Yahweh.  With twelve hundred
chariotsk and threescore thousand horsemen; and the people were without number
that came with him out of Egypt; the Lubins, the Sukkims, and the Ethiopians.  And
he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah, and came to Jerusalem.  Then
came Shemaiah the prophet to Rebohoam, and to the princes of Judah, that were
gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, thus says the
Lord Yahweh, you have forsaken Me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand
of Shishak.  Whereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and
they said, the Lord Yahweh is righteous.  And when the Lord Yahweh saw that they
humbled themselves, the word of the Lord Yahweh came to Shemaiah, saying, they
have humbled themselves, therefore I will not destroy them; but I will grant them
some deliverance; and My wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the
hand of Shishak.  Nevertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know My
service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.

Lets look at the consequences of sin in Noah’s days (Genesis 6-8); the wickedness
of man was great in the earth.  The flood was released upon all that did not get into
the ark which Noah built; and only 8 persons were saved.

The consequences of the fiery serpents in Moses’ days (Number 21:4-9) “and they
journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom,
and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.  And the
people spoke against God, and against Moses, wherefore have you brought us up
out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?  For there is no bread, neither is there any
water, and our soul loathes this light bread.  And the Lord Yahweh sent fiery
serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel
died.  Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, we have sinned, for we have
spoken against the Lord Yahweh, and against you; pray to the Lord Yahweh, that He
take away the serpents from us.  And Moses prayed for the people.  And the Lord
Yahweh said to Moses, make you a fiery serpent and set it upon a pole; and it shall
come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looks upon it shall live.  And
Moses made a serpent of bras, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a
serpent had bitten any man, when he behold the serpent of brass, he lived”.

The consequences committed by Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11) they lied to
God.  Deception – they pretended to give all when they gave only part.  They did not
have to give any; they could have given any amount and pleased the Lord, had they
been honest.  Covetousness – they wanted the glory that was showered upon
Barnabas and others in the church.  Hypocrisy – a hypocrite is a person who
pretends outwardly to be what he never intends to be inwardly.  Lying – they lied to
God the Holy Spirit and they dropped dead.

Curses comes for a reason (Proverbs 26:2) says “as a bird by wandering, as the
swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come”.  Isaiah 1:19-20 says “if you
be willing and obedient, you shall eat of the good of the land.  But if you refuse and
rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it”.

Jeremiah was told to speak to the Israelites (Jeremiah 11:1-5) the word that come to
Jeremiah from the Lord Yahweh, saying.  Hear you the words of this covenant, and
speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.  And say to them,
thus says the Lord God of Israel; cursed be the man that obeys not the words of this
covenant.  Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out
of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, obey My voice and do them,
according to all which I command you; so shall you be My people, and I will be your
God.  that I may perform the oath which I have sworn to your fathers, to give them a
land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day.  Then answered, I and said, so be
it, O Lord Yahweh”.  Again in Jeremiah 17:5 the Lord Yahweh says “thus says the
Lord Yahweh, cursed be the man that trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and
whose heart departs from the Lord Yahweh”.

Zechariah tells us on whom the curse falls (Zechariah 5:3-4) “then said he to me, this
is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth; for every one that steals
shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that swear, shall be cut
off as on that side according to it.  I will bring it forth, says the Lord God of hosts, and
it shall enter into the house of the thief; and into the house of him that swears falsely
by My name; and it shall remain in the midst of his house; and shall consume it with
the timber thereof and the stones thereof”.

Many people bring up Job, yet Job said himself “for the thing which I greatly feared is
come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come to me” (Job 3:25).  Fear draws
you to the devil’s territory while faith draws you to God.

Jesus has redeemed us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13)”Christ has
redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us, for it is written,
curses is every one that hangs on a tree”, yet the apostle Paul says in Romans 6:1-
2,11-15 “what shall we say then?  Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
God forbid.  How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?  Likewise
reckon you also yourselves to be dead indeed to sin; but alive to God through Jesus
Christ our Lord.  Let not sin there reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it
in the lusts thereof.  Neither yield you your members as instruments of
unrighteousness to sin; but yield yourselves to God, as those that  are alive from the
dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.  For sin shall not
have dominion over you; for you are not under the law, but under grace.  What
then?  Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace?  God
forbid”.

Jesus Himself said that He did not come to condemn the law, in fact He reaffirmed it
by giving two commandments (Matthew 22:36-40) “master, which is the great
commandment in the law?  Jesus said to him, you shall love the Lord your God with
all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.  This is the first and
great commandment.  And the second is like to it, you shall love your neighbor as
yourself.  On these two commandments hand all the law and the prophets”.

We are warned, not to give place to the devil (Ephesians 4:25-32) “wherefore putting
away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor; for we are members one of
another.  Be you angry, and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath.
Neither give place to the devil.  Let him that stole steal no more; but rather let him
labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him
that needs.  Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which
is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers.  And grieve
not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby you are sealed to the day of redemption.  Let all
bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from
you, with all malice.  And be you kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another; even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you”.

You give place to the devil, when you obey him over what God has said (Romans 6:
16) “know you not, that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants
you are to whom you obey; whether of sin to death, or of obedience to
righteousness”?

Just like Adam had a choice, and he obeyed the devil and brought down the curse
on mankind, we to have a choice who we will obey.  Moses told the Israelites in
Deuteronomy 30:15-20 “see, I have set before you this day, life and good, and death
and evil.  In that I command you this day to love the Lord Yahweh your God, to walk
in His ways, and to keep His commandments, and His statutes and His judgments,
that you may live and multiply; and the Lord Yahweh your God shall bless you in the
land where you go to possess it.  But if your heart turn away, so that you will not
hear, but shall be drawn away; and worship other gods, and serve them.  I denounce
to you this day, that you shall surely perish; and that you shall not prolong your days
upon the land, where you pass over Jordan to go to possess it.  I call heaven and
earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death,
blessing and cursing, therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live.
That you may love the Lord Yahweh your God, and that you may obey His voice, and
that you may cling to Him, for He is your life, and the length of your days; that you
may dwell in the land which the Lord Yahweh swear to your fathers, to Abraham, to
Isaac, and to Jacob to give them”.

We have to examine ourselves to see if we have opened any door to the devil, and
pray that God will give us wisdom to close any open door (II Chronicles 7:14) says “if
My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and
seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will
forgive their sin, and will heal their land”.  Remember that God is the same
yesterday, today and forever (I John 1:9) says “if we confess our sins, He is faithful
and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”.
