Understanding the Fall of Mankind
When Adam sinned, he died spiritually, he was separated from God and the
Garden of Eden. This was the spiritual ruin of man.
The whole human race has one thing in common; death (Romans 5:12-14)
“therefore, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered the world, and death
through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. For until
the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had
not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a
type of Him who was to come”. God had commanded Adam saying “of every
tree of the garden you may freely eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil, you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it, you shall
surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17).
We all know that Eve was tricked by the devil, and she did eat and gave also
to her husband with her and he did eat. You see the devil told Eve that she
would not surely die; he lied because he is the father of lies, but Adam and
Eve took his word above God’s word (Genesis 3). Eve ate the forbidden fruit
and gave it to Adam, and he ate. It was a test of simple obedience. They had
the fruit of all of the other trees, and there was no need for them to eat of the
forbidden tree. Because the put the words of the devil in higher authority
than God’s words, they actually choose the devil as their master (Romans 6:
16) “know you not, that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his
servants you are to whom you obey; whether of sin to death, or of obedience
to righteousness”.
Let’s look at what all did mankind lose in the fall? We lost out right standing,
and our fellowship with God. God cannot be with sin. We lost our peace and
our provisions. Before the fall God provided every thing that mankind needed
(Genesis 1:28-30) “ and God blessed them, and God said to them, be fruitful
and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over
the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing
that moves upon the earth. And God said, Behold I have given every herb
bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the
which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be fore meat. And to
every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of air, and to every thing that
creeps upon the earth wherein is life, I have given every green herb for meat,
and it was so”, but afterward mankind was put out of the garden and had to
provide for himself (Genesis 3:17-19, 23-24) “and to Adam He said, because
you have hearkened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, of
which I commanded you, saying, you shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground
for your sake, in sorrow shall you eat of it, all the days of your life. Thorns
also and thistles shall it bring forth to you; and you shall eat the herb of the
field. In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, till you return to the
ground; for out of it were you taken, for dust you are, and to dust shall you
return. Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden; to till
the ground from where he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He
places at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword
which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life”. Yet God covered
them by shedding the first blood (Genesis 3:21) “to Adam also and to his wife
did the Lord God make coats of skins and clothed them”. God didn’t leave
mankind in a lost state. God sacrificed the animal to cover them; and just as
the Israelites made sacrifices to cover their sins as a temporary covering, until
Jesus would come and make the final sacrifice.
God’s remedy for man’s ruin is His only begotten Son (John 3:16); who came
into this sin-cursed world through the womb of the Virgin Mary, and lived a
holy, sinless life because He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and not by a
father bearing the sin of Adam. He had no human father, in sinless human
flesh He was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. God the Father
sent His Son into the world to give His life a ransom for many. He came to pay
the debt of sin with His life. God’s remedy for man’s ruin was completed when
Jesus suffered the supreme penalty on Calvary, He paid the believer’s debt of
sin in full (I John 2:2) “and He is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours
only, but also for the sins of the whole world”; Adam was the head of the
human race; by natural birth we are his descendants. When Adam sinned,
death passed upon all because all sinned in Adam. I Corinthians 15:22 says
“for as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive”.
There are two Adams listed in the Bible (I Corinthians 15:45) “and so it is
written, the first man Adam became a living being, the last Adam (Christ),
became a life giving spirit”. The first Adam was created; the last Adam was
virgin born. The first Adam was tempted and failed; the last Adam was
tempted in all points as the first Adam, but was victorious over sin and the
devil. Through the first Adam came death and a sinful nature. Through the
last Adam (Christ) came eternal life (John 3:36) and an incorruptible nature (I
Peter 1:23). In Adam all died spiritually immediately, and then physical death
began to reign; but in Christ all believers are made alive.
We have to know what the fall of mankind lost for us, in order to recognize
what Jesus restored. Jesus said on the cross “it is finished”, He finished all
that the Father gave Him to do; and that is redemption for mankind. The
Bible says in Psalms 107:2 “let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He
has redeemed from the hand of the enemy”.
Jesus restored our ability to stand before God (Ephesians 2:18-19) “for
through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. Now therefore
you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints,
and of the household of God”. We are told to come boldly before the throne
of grace (Hebrews 10:19-20,22) “having therefore, brethren, boldness to
enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus. By a new and living way, which
He has consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say His flesh. Let us
draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts
sprinkled from an evil conscience; and our bodies washed with pure water”;
and in Ephesians 3:12 it says “in whom we have boldness and access with
confidence by the faith of Him”.
Jesus restored our fellowship with God and our hope (Ephesians 2:1-7) “and
you has He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins. Wherein in
time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the
prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of
disobedience. Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in
the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and
were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in
mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us. Even when we were dead in
sins, has quickened us together with Christ, by grace you are saved. And
has raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in
Christ Jesus. That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches
of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
Verses 12-14 shows us how we were before Christ, it says “That at that time
you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and
strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in
the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who sometimes were far off are made
near by the blood of Christ. For He is our peace, who has made both one,
and has broken down the middle wall of partition between us”. Remember
that we have been made the righteousness of God in Christ (II Corinthians 5:
21).
Jesus restored for us our peace and our provisions (I Corinthians 1:30) “But
of Him are you in Christ Jesus, who of God is made to us wisdom, and
righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption”.
Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:25-33 that God is our provider, it says
“therefore I say to you, take no thought for your life; what you shall eat, or
what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the
life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air;
for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your
heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they? Which of
you by taking thought can add one cubit to his stature? And why take you
thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil
not, neither do they spin. And yet, I say to you, that even Solomon in all his
glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the
grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall He
not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore take no thought
saying, what shall we eat? Or, what shall we drink? Or wherewithal shall we be
clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly
Father knows that you have need of all these things. But seek you first the
kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added
to you”.
Romans 8:32 says “He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for
us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things”? Paul also tells
us in Philippians 4:19 “but my God shall supply all your need according to His
riches in glory by Christ Jesus”.
Jesus told us that the devil, the thief comes not but to steal, and to kill, and to
destroy; I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly (John 10:10). We have to know what God has given to us and
stand firm and not let the devil steal it. Jesus told us that the word is seed
and the devil comes immediately to steal the word our of our heart; yet he can
only steal the word that we do not understand.
