There Are Rewards
Reward is what is given in return for good done; recompense. Also what is given in
return for evil done; punishment. A reward can refer to something given for either a
good or bad act. Proverbs 11:18-19 says “the wicked works a deceitful work; but to
him that sows righteousness shall be a sure reward. As righteousness tends to life;
so he that pursues evil pursues it to his own death”. Also in Proverbs 13:13 which
says “whoso despises the word shall be destroyed; but he that fears (reverences)
the commandment shall be rewarded”. The psalmist, for example, speaks of “a
reward for the righteous” (Psalms 58:11) and of “the reward of the wicked” (Psalms
91:8).
David writes in Psalms 19:7-11 “the law of the Lord Yahweh is perfect, converting
the soul; the testimony of the Lord Yahweh is sure, making wise the simple. The
statutes of the Lord Yahweh are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the
Lord Yahweh is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear (reverence) of the Lord
Yahweh is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord Yahweh are true and
righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine
gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is Your
servant warned; and in keeping of them there is great reward”.
Jesus in His B attitudes says “blessed are they which are persecuted for
righteousness’ sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when
man shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you
falsely, for My sake. Rejoice and be exceeding glad; for great is your reward in
heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets, which were before you. You have
heard that it has been said, you shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But
I say to you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that
hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you. That
you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven; for He makes His sun to
rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For
if you love them which love you, what reward have you? Do not even the publicans
the same? And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more than others? Do
not even the publicans so? Be you therefore perfect, even as your Father which is
in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:10-12, 44-48).
Jesus warns us that our rewards are supposed to come from God and not man
(Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18) which says “take heed that you do not your alms (giving)
before men, to be seen of them; otherwise you have no reward of your Father which
is in heaven. therefore when you do your alms, do not sound a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory
of men. Verily I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do alms, let not
your left hand know what your right hand does. That your alms may be in secret;
and your Father which sees in secret Himself shall reward you openly. And when
you pray; you shall not be as the hypocrites are; for they love to pray standing in
the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men.
Verily I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, enter into your
closet, and when you have shut your door; pray to your Father which is in secret;
and your Father which sees in secret shall reward you openly. Moreover when you
fast, be not as the hypocrites; of a sad countenance, for they disfigure their faces,
that they may appear to men to fast. Verily I say to you, they have their reward. But
you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face. That you appear not to
men to fast, but to your Father which is in secret, and your Father which sees in
secret shall reward you openly”.
Jesus tells a parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30 “for the kingdom of heaven
is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered
to them his goods. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another
one; to every man according to his several ability; and immediately took his journey.
Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made
them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other
two. But he that had received one went and dug in the earth, and his lord’s money.
After a long time the lord of those servants comes, and reckons with them. And so
he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, lord,
you delivered to me five talents, behold, I have gained beside them five talents
more. His lord said to him, well done, you good and faithful servant; you have been
faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things; enter you into the
joy of your lord. He also that had received two talents came, and said, lord, you
delivered to me two talents, behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
His lord said to him, well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful
over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things; enter you into the joy of
your lord. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, lord, I knew
you that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering
where you have not spread. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the
earth, lo, there you have that is yours. His lord answered and said to him, you
wicked, and slothful servant, you knew that I reap where I sowed no6t, and gather
where I have not scattered. You ought therefore to have put my money to the
exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
Take therefore the talent from him and give to him which has ten talents. For to
every one that has shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but from him, that
has not shall be taken away even that which he has. And cast you the unprofitable
servant into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth”. We all
have been given talents, and w must use our talents to increase the kingdom of God.
Matthew 16:27 says “for the Son of man shall come in the glory of His Father with
His angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works”.
We have been ordained to do good works (Ephesians 2:10) says “for we are His
workmanship; created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before
ordained that we should walk in them”. Paul breaks it down to us in (I Corinthians 3:
8-14) which says “now he that plants and he that waters are one; and every man
shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are laborers
together with God; you are God’s husbandry, you are God’s building. According to
the grace of God which is given to me, as a wise master builder; I have laid the
foundation and another builds thereon. But let every man take heed how he builds
thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus
Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones,
wood hay, stubble. Every man’s work shall be made manifest; for the day shall
declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s
work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he has built thereupon, he
shall receive a reward”.
We are told to hold on to our confidence (Hebrews 10:35-39) “cast not away
therefore your confidence, which has great recompence of reward. For you have
need of patience, that after you have done the will of God, you might receive the
promise. For yet a little while, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
Now the just shall live by faith; but if any man draw back, My soul shall have no
pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back to perdition; but of them that
believe to the saving of the soul”.
Hebrews 11:6 says “but without faith it is impossible to please Him; for he that comes
to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek
Him”. Let’s look at Moses in the hall of faith (Hebrews 11:24-26) “by faith Moses
when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.
Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the
pleasures of sin for a season. Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than
the treasures in Egypt; for he had respect to the recompence of the reward”. Moses
was looking to the things above, not the things of this earth, as we are told to do
(Colossians 3:1-2) “if you then be risen with Christ; seek those things which are
above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things
above, not on things on the earth”.
Peter writes in I Peter 5:1-4 “the elders which are among you exhort, who am also an
elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that
shall be revealed. Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight
thereof, not by constrain, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind.
Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock. And
when the chief Shepherd shall appear, you shall receive a crown of glory that fades
not away”.
James says “blessed is the man that endures temptation; for when he is tried, he
shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love Him”.
There is joy in heaven as they worship (Revelation 11:15-18) “and the four and
twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, ad
worshipped God. Saying, we give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which are, and
were, and are to come, because You have taken to You, Your great power, and
have reigned. And the nations were angry, and Your wrath is come, and the time of
the dead, that they should be judged, and that You should give reward to Your
servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear (reverence) Your name,
small and great; and should destroy them which destroy the earth”.
Jesus says “behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man
according as his work shall be” (Revelation 22:12).
From this study, you will see that rewards are available to us (I John 5:14-15) “and
this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His
will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know
that we have the petitions that we desired of Him”.
