The Word
The Bible establishes the Word of God and Jesus as the same (John 1:1-14, I John
1:1, Revelation 19:13). The Word – a theological phrase that expresses the
absolute, eternal, and ultimate being of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of John declared
“and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Through the
incarnation of Christ, God has come to dwell in our midst. The world began through
the origination and means of the Word. In Genesis 1 the expression “God said” is
used again and again. Through the life and ministry of Jesus, a unique and final
revelation of God has been given. In Christ, the Word of God, God’s plan and
purpose for mankind is clearly revealed (Hebrews 1:1-3) “God who at sundry times
and in divers manners spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets. Has in
these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things
by whom also He made the worlds. Who being the brightness of His glory and the
express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power when
He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on
high”.
People through out the ages have wished that they were born during Jesus’ times,
having a chance to walk with Him. I have good news, Jesus didn’t begin when He
was born, He was there in the beginning (John 1:1-3,14) “In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Same was in the
beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing
made that was made. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we
beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and
truth”. Even greater news is that Jesus is here now. He is the Word and we have to
thank God that He made a way for us to have the Word. In the dark ages, the Bibles
was only in the church, and even was in languages other than the people spoke, but
now Bibles are available in many languages and it is also on the internet. In places
where it is illegal to have a Bible, you can go on “Google” and have access.
In the Godhead, the Son functions as the revealer of God and the reality of God.
The word of Christ given to His disciples cleanses them and frees them (John 8:31-
32) “ then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, if you continue in My
word, then are you My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth and the truth
shall make you free”. His “word of the kingdom” is the living seed. Planted in the
good soil of receptive hearts, it bears fruit for God (Matthew 13:19; Mark 4:14). God’
s word has power to fulfill His will. It will not return to Him “empty” but accomplish that
which He purposes (Isaiah 55:11). In Psalms 107:20 the Bible says “He sent His
word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions”. The Gospel of
Jesus Christ is, in a special way, the word of God as it makes known and brings into
operation the reconciliation with God, that is, His purpose for mankind (II Corinthians
5:17-21) “therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are
passed away, behold, all things become new. And all things are of God, who has
reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and has given to us the ministry of
reconciliation. To say, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, not
imputing their trespasses to them; and has committed to us the word of
reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did
beseech you by us; we pray you in Christ’s stead, be you reconciled to God. For He
has made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the
righteousness of God in Him”.
Just as Jesus spoke only what He heard of His Father, we as His followers are to do
the same (Ephesians 5:1). Jesus defeated the devil by using the word, He said “it is
written”. The same word is available to us even now. The solution to every problem
can be found in the word of God. Jesus tells us in John 15:5-10 “I am the vine, you
are the branches, he that abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much
fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If a man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as
a branch, and is withered, and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and
they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you shall ask what
you will, and it shall be done to you. Herein is My Father glorified, that you bear
much fruit; so shall you be My disciples. As the Father has loved Me, so have I
loved you, continue you in My love. If you keep My commandments, you shall abide
in My love, even as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love”.
Because of this the devil will try to keep people from reading, studying and
meditating on the word, he will bring all kinds of distractions, to try to stop you from
walking in what God wants you to have.
Jesus is called the “author and finisher of our faith”, study to see what He
accomplished through His death, burial and resurrection, and come boldly to the
throne of grace. The Bible says in I John 4:17 “herein is our love made perfect, that
we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this
world”. Focus on the fact that as long as we have the word, we have Jesus with us,
because Jesus is the word.
God’s word is the primary means by which He is present and working in the world.
He is not Himself part of this world, but He acts in it by means of His word. He
becomes personally known through His word. God’s word is totally dependable, it
represents His permanent commitment. When heard and responded to, His word
meets deep needs in the human heart and provides joy, satisfaction, and confident
direction that can be achieved in no other manner (Psalms 68:11) “the Lord gave
the word, great was the company of those that published it”. We have to believe the
word and then speak the word with boldness, “I believed therefore have I spoken, we
also believe and speak”. Proverbs 4:20-23 gives us instructions, it says “my son,
attend to my words, incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your
eyes, keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those that find them,
and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the
issues of life”. This sounds like what The Lord Yahweh told Joshua in Joshua 1:8.
The Bible says that the word of God is spirit and life, so speak life over your
circumstances.
