Sin Consciousness
Sin consciousness is a trick of the devil; he wants no more than to keep a person
trapped focusing on their sinfulness, because he knows that what ever you focus
on, you will be drawn to. Remember Proverbs 23:7 says “as a man thinks in his
heart, so is he”.
The Bible calls the devil “the accuser of the brethren” (Revelation 12:10), he
repeats your short comings to you, over and over, to keep them before your eyes,
but the answer we must quote is “it is written” and then declare your righteousness
which God has given you (II Corinthians 5:21) “for He (God) has made Him (Jesus)
to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God
in Him”.
Sin consciousness can be something held against you, yourself whereby you
focus on your sinfulness; or it can also be against the way you look at other people’
s sins and condemn them for it. It is easy to see the faults in others, and
sometimes we will even show their faults to others but that is gossip. And we must
not allow the devil to use us to speak against others. Jesus warns us (Matthew 7:1-
3) “judge not that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge; you shall
be judged, and with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again.
And why behold you the mote that is in your brother’s eye, but consider not the
beam that is in your own eyes”?
Jesus Christ has paid the price for the sins of the whole world (past, present and
future) Hebrews 9:12 says “neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His
own blood He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal
redemption for us” and Hebrews 10:10 says “by the which will we are sanctified
through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all”.
Now that does not give us a license to practice sin, but it takes away the
condemnation (Romans 8:1-4) “there is therefore now no condemnation to them
which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the
law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and
death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God
sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in
the flesh. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not
after the flesh, but after the Spirit”.
The conscience of the believer has been cleansed by the work of Jesus Christ; it
no longer accuses and condemns (Hebrew 9:13-14) “for if the blood of bulls and of
goats, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies to the purifying
of the flesh. How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal
Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works
to serve the living God”.
Also in Hebrews 10:14-23 which says “For by one offering He has perfected
forever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Spirit also is a witness to us; for
after that He had said before. This is the covenant that I will make with them after
these days, says the Lord, I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds will
I write them. And their sins an iniquities will I remember no more. Now where
remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren,
boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus. By a new and living way,
which He has consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, His flesh. And
having a high priest over the house of God. Let us draw near with a true heart in
full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and
our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith
without wavering; for He is faithful that promised”.
We are told not to stay in sin conscienceness (I Corinthians 15:34) “awake to
righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God; I speak this
to your shame”. As we began to focus on the fact that God has made us
righteous, and as we meditate on this, we will find that more and more we will ask
righteous.
Paul is a good example for us in (II Corinthians 7:2), he said “receive us, we have
wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man”. This is
the same man that persecuted the church of God (Acts 22:4, 26:11) Paul says
“and I persecuted this way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both
men and women. And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled
them to blaspheme, and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them
even to strange cities”. Paul recognized his righteousness (I Corinthians 15:9-10)
“for I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle,
because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God, I am what I am,
and His grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain, but I labored more
abundantly than they all; yet not I, but the grace of God which was in me”.
We also know how that Peter denied the Lord three times, when He was taken
and questioned, but afterward he repented and preached on the day of Pentecost
and three thousand was added to the church.
Don’t let your past failures hinder you from receiving all that our heavenly Father
has provided for us (Romans 8:32) “He that spared not His own Son, but delivered
Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things”.
I John 3:19-22 says “And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall
assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than
our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have
we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because
we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight”.
Believers are to work to maintain a pure conscience. Conscience is a person’s
inner awareness of conforming to the will of God or departing from it, resulting in
either a sense of approval or condemnation. When believers feel condemned
they will not be able to come before God boldly, but Hebrews 4:16 says “let us
therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy, and find
grace to help in time of need”.
When the devil tells you of something that you have done wrong, tell him that it is
under the blood of Jesus. We have to live in a repentant attitude, when we sin
confess our sins and know that as I John 1:9 says “if we confess our sins, He is
faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”.
