Sin

Transgression of God’s will, either by omitting to do what God’s law requires or by
doing what it forbids.  Mankind was created without sin, morally upright and inclined
to do good (Ecclesiastes 7:29) “Lo, this only have I found, that God has made man
upright; but they have sought out many inventions”.

Sin entered into human experience when Adam and Eve violated the direct
command of God by eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-
7) “now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord
God had made, and he said to the woman, Yea, has God said, you shall not eat of
every tree of the garden?  And the woman said to the serpent, we may eat of the
fruit of the trees of the garden.  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of
the garden, God has said, you shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, less you
die.  And the serpent said to the woman, you shall not surely die.  For God does
know that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall
be as gods, knowing good and evil.  And when the woman saw that the tree was
good for food, and that it was present to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make
one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave to her husband with
her, and he did eat.  And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that
they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves
aprons”.

Because Adam was the head and representative of the whole human race, his sin
affected all future generations (Romans 5:12) “wherefore, as by one man (Adam)
sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for
that all have sinned”.

Mankind originally fell into sin at the temptation of the devil, as the tempter, he
continue3s to lure, people into sin (I Peter 5:8) tells us to “be sober, be vigilant;
because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he
may devour”; nevertheless, people remain fully responsible for what they do.  God
gave mankind free will.

Adam and Eve stepped out from under God’s covering and made their own.  Most
people today are still covered with fig leaves.  Like Adam and Eve, they are hiding
from God.  God didn’t leave Adam and Eve in this state, our loving Father made
them another covering, to do it, He had to shed blood.  We read in Genesis 3:21)
“to Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed
them”.  Sin caused Adam and Eve to be put out of the garden to keep them from
eating of the tree of life and being forever in that lost state.

Against this dark background of sin, and its reality, the gospel comes as the good
news of the deliverance that God has provided through His Son.  Jesus bears the
penalty of sin in place of His people (Mark 10:45) “for even, the Son of man came
not to be ministered to, but to minister and to give His life a ransom for many”.  He
also redeems us from lawlessness and makes us long for good works in service to
God and others (Titus 2:14) “who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us
from all iniquity, and purify to Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works”.

Psalms 32:1 and Romans 4:7 says “blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered”.  Even before the time of Yeshua (Jesus), the Lord made
provision for forgiveness of sin through a covering of blood.  Once a year the high
priest would enter into the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement, acting as a
mediator between God and the people.  He would sprinkle the blood of atonement
upon and in the front of the Ark (cover).  A holy, gracious, merciful God provided
covering for sinful fallen man.  This was acceptable to Him, until He provided the
final and eternal blood atonement through the death of the Messiah Jesus Christ.

Sin is no longer a problem with God.  God was satisfied when Jesus died on the
cross.  Jesus’ blood paid the price for the sins of the whole world.  Isaiah 53:10
says “yet it pleased the Lord Yahweh to bruise Him (Jesus), He has put Him to grief,
when you shall make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall
prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord Yahweh shall prosper in His hand”.
This gives us the other side of John 3:16, God loves us so much, and because He
is a holy just God, He provided our substitute (Jesus) to pay the price for our sins.
Any one who have not received Jesus is still in his sin.

Romans 5:17-19 says “for if by one man’s (Adam) offence death reigned by one,
much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness
shall reign in life by One, Jesus Christ.  Therefore as by the offence of one
judgment came upon all men to condemnation, even so by the righteousness of
One the free gift came upon all men to justification of life.  For as by one man’s
disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One shall many be
made righteous”.

Sin is a problem for mankind because it opens the door for the devil.  Paul tells us
in Romans 6:1-2 “what shall we say then?  Shall we continue to sin, that grace may
abound?  God forbid.  How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”
Then he goes on to explain “let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that you
should obey it in the lusts thereof.  Neither yield you, your members as instruments
of unrighteousness to sin; but yield yourselves to God, as those that are alive from
the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.  For sin shall
not have dominion over you; for you are not under the law, but under grace.  What
then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God
forbid.  Know you not, that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his
servants you are to whom you obey, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to
righteousness”.

Paul goes on to say “for they that are after the flesh, do mind the things of the
flesh, but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.  For to be carnally
minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal
mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed
can be.  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 8:5-8).  In
Galatians 5:16 he tells us how be successful, it says “this I say then, walk in the
Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh”.  And in chapter 6 verses 7-9 it
says “be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man sows, that shall
he also reap.  For he that sows to the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but
he that sows to the Spirit, shall of the Spirit, reap life everlasting.  And let us not be
weary in well doing, for in due season, we shall reap, if we faint not”.

Believers should be in a repentance attitude, not something that happens only
once.  Self-righteousness creeps in, so does pride, spiritual laziness, lack of
compassion, love of the world and unholy living. I John 1:9 says “if we confess our
sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness”.  If we sin and we must know that sometimes people will push
your buttons, until you lash out, we can repent and turn from those ways.

Ephesians 4:26-27, 29-32 says “be you angry, and sin not, let not the sun go down
upon your wrath.  Neither give place to the devil.  Let no corrupt communication
proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may
minister grace to the hearers.  And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God whereby you
are sealed to the day of redemption.  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and
clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.  And be you kind
one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s
sake has forgiven you”.

It is the goodness of God that leads to repentance (Ephesians 2:1-5) “and you has
He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.  Wherein in time past you
walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power
of the air; the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience.  Among whom
also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the
desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even
as others.  But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved
us”.

God made the way for us to be restored, remember that God created mankind
without sin.  We can walk in no condemnation in Christ (Romans 8:1-2).  We are
freed from sin and we have to meditate on that fact and as we do, we will live freed
from sin.  Remember “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).

Don’t fall into the trap that you will always sin; if you think you will always sin, you
will.  But I John 3:5-9 says “and you know that He was manifested to take away our
sins; and in Him is no sin.  Whosoever abides in Him sins not; whosoever sins has
not seen Him, neither known Him.  Little children, let no man deceive you; he that
does righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.  He that commits sin is of
the devil; for the devil sinned from the beginning.  For this purpose the Son of God
was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.  Whosoever is born of
God does not commit sin; for His seed remains in him, and he cannot sin, because
he is born of God”.

When you understand that God is not against us you won’t hide from Him if you fall
short, but run to Him.  The Bible says to “cast your cares on Jesus, for He cares for
you”.  The devil is roaming around, seeking whom he may devour; he is the tempter
who tries to lure people into sin, trying to get you offended, where you fall into
unforgiveness; because if you don’t forgive, neither will God forgive you.  The devil
has been around for over 6000 years and he knows the principles of God, so he
will use those principles against you.

The Bible says “walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh”; walking
in the Spirit is walking in the word of God.  Whenever you are having a problem
breaking a habit, ask Him to help you.  Galatians 5:1 says “stand fast therefore in
the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free, and be not entangles again with the
yoke of bondage”.
