Redemption is Not in the Future
John the Baptist described Jesus of Nazareth as the fulfillment of God’s
redemptive kingdom, and hence, the Messiah of Israel, Jesus, the Son of
Man, came to give Himself as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28, Mark 10:
45). The Messiah came to die for others, in their place. He redeems us by
giving up His life (Romans 3:23-25) “for all have sinned, and come short of
the glory of God. Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus. Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through
faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that
are past, through the forbearance of God”.
Redemption is deliverance by payment of a price. The New Testament
emphasizes the tremendous cost of redemption; “the precious blood of
Christ” (Ephesians 1:7; I Peter 1:19). Believers are exhorted to remember
the “price” of their redemption as a motivation to personal holiness (I
Corinthians 6:19-20). The Bible also shows the result of redemption;
freedom from the curse of the law and freedom to serve God through Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Galatians 3:13-14, 29) says “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the
law, being made a curse for us, for it is written, cursed is every one that
hangs on a tree. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles
through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through
faith. And if you be Christ’s, then are you Abraham’s seed, and heirs
according to the promise”.
God says in Hosea 4:6a “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”.
We have to know what we are redeemed from in order to benefit from it.
Deuteronomy 28:16-61 shows us what we are redeemed from.
Spiritual death – God told Adam that in the day that he would eat of the tree
of good and evil, that he would surely die, yet he ate and was banished
from the tree of life. James 2:26 says “for as the body without the spirit is
dead, so faith without works is dead also”. Adam’s died spiritually and he
could only reproduce spiritually dead offspring, we all died spiritually.
Jesus came to deliver us from spiritual death (John 5:24-26) “Verily, verily, I
say to you, he that hears My word, and believes on Him that sent Me, has
everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from
death to life. Verily, verily, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is,
when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear
shall live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so has He given to the Son
to have life in Himself”.
Jesus also says in John 10:10 “the thief comes not but for to steal, and to
kill, and to destroy. I am come that they might have life, and that they might
have it more abundantly”. II Corinthians 5:17 says “therefore if any man be
in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new”.
Ephesians 2:1-6 says “and you has He quickened, who were dead in
trespasses and sins. Wherein in time past you walked according to the
course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the
spirit that now works in the children of disobedience. Among whom also we
all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh; fulfilling the
desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of
wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love
wherewith He loved us. Even when we were dead in sins, has quickened us
together with Christ, by grace you are saved. And has raised us up
together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus”.
Many Christians have received the forgiveness of sins, and recognize that
they are delivered from spiritual death, and will be able to go to heaven
when they die, yet we are redeemed from more than spiritual death; we are
also redeemed from poverty and sickness. Psalms 103:1-5 says “bless the
Lord Yahweh, O my soul and all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Bless the Lord Yahweh, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits. Who
forgives all your iniquities, who heal all your diseases. Who redeems your
life from destruction; who crowns you with loving kindness and tender
mercies. Who satisfies your mouth with good things; so that your youth is
renewed like the gales”. Psalms 107:2 says “let the redeemed of the Lord
Yahweh say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy”. Let
us say we are redeemed from sickness and diseases, poverty, stress etc. It
is a mountain of adversity in your life, therefore you have to speak to it.
Jesus tells us to speak to the mountain and tell it to be cast into the sea,
and it shall obey us (Matthew 21:21-22; Mark 11:23-24).
Sicknesses – sickness and diseases are apart of the curses (Deuteronomy
28:22, 27-29, 61) “the Lord Yahweh shall smite you with a consumption,
and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning,
and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew, and they shall
pursue you until you perish. The Lord Yahweh shall smite you with the
botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch,
whereof you can not be healed. The Lord Yahweh shall smite you with
madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart. And you shall grope
at noonday, as the blind grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in
your ways; and you shall be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no
man shall save you”.
Even though we sometimes bring trouble upon ourselves, we can still cry
out to the Lord Yahweh and He will deliver us (Psalms 107:17-20) “fools
because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are
afflicted. Their soul abhors all manner of meat; and they draw near to the
gates of death. Then they cry to the Lord Yahweh in their trouble, and He
saves them out of their distresses. He sent His word and healed them and
delivered them from their destructions”.
III John 2 says “beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be
in health, even as your soul prospers”.
Poverty - poverty is in the curse of the law (Deuteronomy 28:16-20; 38-40)
“cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. Cursed
shall be your basket and your store. Cursed shall be the fruit of your body,
and the fruit of your land, the increase of your kine, and the flocks of your
sheep. Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be
when you go out. The Lord Yahweh shall send upon you cursing, vexation,
and rebuke, in all that you set your hand to for to do, until you be
destroyed, and until you perish quickly; because of the wickedness of your
doings, whereby you have forsaken Me. You shall carry much seed out into
the field, and shall gather but little in, for the locust shall consume it. You
shall plant vineyards, and dress them, but shall neither drink of the wine,
nor gather the grapes, for the worms shall eat them. You shall have olive
trees throughout all your coasts, but you shall not anoint yourself with the
oil; for your olive shall cast its fruit”.
