Our Thought Life
Our thought life is crucial and in Philippians 4:6-9, it tells us what we should
think on, it says “be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God. And
the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and
minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true,
whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things
are pure, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if
there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which you have both
learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do; and the God of peace
shall be with you”.
As you reflect on this passage, you see that each of these are associated with
the word of God. Deuteronomy 30:19-20 tells us that we get to choose “I call
heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life
and death, blessing and cursing, therefore choose life, that both you and your
seed may live. That you may love the Lord Yahweh your God, and that you
may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him; for He is your life, and the
length of your days; that you may dwell in the land which the Lord Yahweh
swear to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them”.
We are able to set our minds on the right things; the Bible tells us in (II
Corinthians 4:18) “while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the
things which are not seen, for the things which are seen are temporal, but the
things which are not seen are eternal”; and in (Colossians 3:1-3) “if you then be
risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the
right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on the things on the
earth. For you are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God”. We have to
deem ourselves as dead, and renew our minds to the word of God (Galatians 2:
20) Paul says “I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ
lives in me, and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son
of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me”.
Philippians chapter 2 tells us to “let this mind”, meaning we have a choose; in
Philippians 2:2-5 it says “full fill you my joy, that you be like minded, having the
same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through
strife or vain glory, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than
themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the
things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”.
Jesus tells us to “take no thought for tomorrow” (Matthew 6:25-34) Jesus is
telling us that as we put out trust in the Lord, and stop trying to take care of
ourselves, we will have the things that God has provided for us. It says
“therefore I say to you, take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what
you shall drink, nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more
than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air; for they
gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much
better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit to his
stature? And why take you thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field,
how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin. And yet I say to you, that
even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if
God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into
the oven, shall He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? There fore
take no though saying, what shall we eat? Or; what shall we drink? Or,
wherewithal shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles
seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things.
But seek you first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these
things shall be added to you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow; for the
morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient to the day is the evil
thereof”.
As you focus on things in the future, you can be caught up in worrying about
how it will turn out; and worry is a trick that the devil uses to take you away from
the word of God. When trouble comes your way, listen to what Paul says in (II
Corinthians 10:3-5) for though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the
flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God
to the pulling down of strong holds. Casting down imaginations, and every high
thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity
every thought to the obedience of Christ”. When our thoughts line up with the
word of God, we can defeat the devil every time, just like Jesus did.
Many people quote Isaiah 55:8-9 “for My thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither, are your ways My ways, says the Lord Yahweh. For as the heavens
are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My
thoughts than your thoughts”. And God did say this, only He was speaking to
the wicked in verse 7 it says “let the wicked forsake his way, and the
unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord Yahweh, and He
will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon”.
This is confirmed in I Corinthians 2:9-12 which says “but as it is written, eye has
not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things
which God has prepared for them that love Him. But God has revealed them to
us by His Spirit for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God.
For what man knows the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in
him? Even so the things of God knows no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we
have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, that we
might know the things that are freely given to us of God”.
Proverbs 23:7 says “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he”. So let us focus our
thoughts. The book of Proverbs teaches us how to examine our thoughts
(Proverbs 12:5) says “the thoughts of the righteous are right, but the counsels
of the wicked are deceit”; (Proverbs 15:26) says “the thoughts of the wicked are
an abomination to the Lord Yahweh, but the words of the pure are pleasant
words”.
Good news Ephesians 3:20 says “now to Him that is able to do exceeding
abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in
us”. What are your thoughts? The Bible says in Isaiah 26:3-4 “You will keep
him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You; because he trusts in You.
Trust you in the Lord Yahweh for ever; for in the Lord Yahweh is everlasting
strength”.
Proverbs 16:3 gives us the how to; it says “commit your works to the Lord
Yahweh, and your thoughts shall be established”. James says it like this in
James 4:7-8 which says “submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the devil,
and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts you double minded”.
