Our Habitation
Habitation = abode, residence, a dwelling place. A habitation is not just a place
where one visits, but is a place where one stays.
David declares his love for the habitation of God (Psalms 26:8) “Lord Yahweh, I
have loved the habitation of Your house, and the place where Your honor
dwells”. David spent much time in the presence of the Lord Yahweh, and he was
called “a man after God’s own heart”. David wanted to build a temple for God,
but was not able because he had blood on his hands.
However Solomon was allowed and Solomon referred to the temple as God’s
house of habitation; he says to God in (II Chronicles 6:2) “I have built an house of
habitation for You, and a place for Your dwelling forever”. As Solomon built and
dedicated the temple, he asked God to hear the prayers made in the temple (II
Chronicles 6:39-42) “then hear You from the heavens, even from Your dwelling
place, their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive
Your people which have sinned against You. Now my God, let, I beseech You,
Your eyes be open, and let Your ears be attentive to the prayer that is made in
this place. Now therefore arise, O Lord Yahweh God into Your resting place,
You, and the ark of Your strength; let Your priests, O Lord God, be clothed with
salvation, and let Your saints rejoice in goodness. O Lord God, turn not away the
face of Your anointed, remember the mercies of David Your servant”.
The church is called a habitation of God (Ephesians 3:19-22) “now therefore you
are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of
the household of God. And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone. In whom all the
building fitly framed together grows to a holy temple in the Lord. In whom you
also are built together for an habitation of God through the Spirit”.
Paul calls us God’s temple (I Corinthians 3:16-17) “know you not that you are the
temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man defile the
temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple
you are”. And in (I Corinthians 6:19-20) “what? Know you not that your body is
the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have of God, and you are
not your own? For you are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your
body, and in you spirit, which are God’s”.
And again in (II Corinthians 6:14-18) we are told to be separate from sin “be you
not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what fellowship has
righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion has light with
darkness? And what concord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has he that
believes with an infidel? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols?
For you are the temple of the living God, as God has said, I will dwell in them, and
walk in them, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Wherefore
come out from among them, and be you separate, says the Lord, and touch not
the unclean thing, and I will receive you. And will be a Father to you, and you
shall be My Sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty”.
We can cry out for the Lord (Psalms 71:1-3) the Psalmist says “in you O Lord
Yahweh, do I put my trust; let me never be put to confusion. Deliver me in Your
righteousness, and cause me to escape; incline Your ear to me, and save me.
Be You my strong habitation; whereto I may continually resort; You have given
commandment to save me; for You are my rock and my fortress”. Psalms 1107:1-
7,36 says “O give thanks to the Lord Yahweh for He is good, for His mercy
endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord Yahweh say so, whom He has
redeemed from the hand of the enemy. And gathered them out of the lands from
the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. They wandered
in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. hungry and
thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried to the Lord Yahweh in their
trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses. And He led them forth by
the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation. And there He makes the
hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation”.
God declared a habitation for Israel (Isaiah 32:18) “my people shall dwell in a
peaceable habitation; and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places”. And
(Jeremiah 50:19) “I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on
Carmel, and Bashan and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and
Gilead”. We know that this was fulfilled in 1948 when Israel became a nation
again.
Psalms 100 tells us how to enter into His habitation; it says “make a joyful noise to
the Lord Yahweh, all the earth. Serve the Lord Yahweh with gladness; come
before His presence with singing. Know you that the Lord Yahweh, He is God, it
is He that has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep
of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with
praise, be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord Yahweh is good; His
mercy is everlasting; and His truth endures to all generations”. Because He made
this promise to all generations, this applies to us as well.
We are citizens of heaven (Ephesians 2:19); Philippians 3:20 says “for our
citizenship is in heaven; from where also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus
Christ”; and are told to focus on heavenly things (II Corinthians 4:18) “while we
look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen, for the
things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are
eternal”.
Our habitation is supposed to be in Christ (John 1:14) “and the Word was made
flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only
begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth”. Jesus explains the benefits and
consequences of our habitation being in Christ (John 15:4-7) “abide in Me, and I
in you, as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no
more can you, except you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches, he
that abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit; for without Me
you can do nothing. If a man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is
withered and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it
shall be done to you”.
Psalms 91:1-10 says “he that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall
abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord Yahweh, He is my
refuge and my fortress; my God in Him will I trust. Surely He shall deliver you from
the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover you with
His feathers, and under His wings shall you trust; His truth shall be your shield
and buckler. You shall not be afraid for the terror by night, nor for the arrow that
flies by day. Nor for the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor for the destruction
that wastes at noonday. A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at
your right hand; but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you
behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord
Yahweh which is my refuge, even the Most High, your habitation. There shall no
evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling”. This promise is
for those who dwells in the secret place of the Most High; and we must remember
that to dwell means to abide, stay.
Proverbs 3:33 says “the curse of the Lord Yahweh is in the house of the wicked;
but He blesses the habitation of the just”.
We are told to draw near to God (Hebrews 7:19) “for the law made nothing
perfect; but the bringing in of a better hope did, by the which we draw near to
God”; also Hebrews 10:19-22 says “having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter
into the holiest by the blood of Jesus. By a new and living way, which He has
consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, His flesh. And having a high
priest over the house of God. Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance
of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies
washed with pure water”. Then James says “draw near to God, and He will draw
near to you” (James 4:8a).
Many times God asked His people to return to Him. He says many times “I will
never leave you or forsake you”, this implies that it is people who leave Him, just
as Adam and Eve hid from Him in the garden, people fall short and get
disappointed with themselves, and stray away from God. But when you fall, don’t
run from God, run to God and He will be able to help you. We are to come boldly
to the throne of grace.
