Make God Your Foundation

Foundation is the strong, stable base on which a building is constructed.  We are
warned when moral foundations are destroyed, a society is in danger of collapse
(Psalms 11:3) “if the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do”?

The foundation of God is truth, love, righteousness and justice, because these
are His qualities (Psalms 89:14-17) “justice and judgment are the habitation of
Your throne; mercy and truth shall go before Your face.  Blessed is the people
that know the joyful sound; they shall walk, O Lord Yahweh, in the light of Your
countenance.  In Your name shall they rejoice all the day; and in Your
righteousness shall they be exalted.  For You are the glory of their strength; and
in Your favor our horn shall be exalted”; and also (Psalms 97:1-2) “the Lord
Yahweh reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.
Clouds and darkness are round about Him; righteousness and judgment are the
foundation of His throne”.  Proverbs 10:25 says “as the whirlwind passes, so is the
wicked no more, but the righteous is an everlasting foundation”.

God the Father Himself lays the foundation for us (Isaiah 28:16) “therefore thus
says the Lord Yahweh God, behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried
stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation; he that believes shall not make
haste”.  Ephesians 2:10, 18-22 says “for we are His workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in
them.  For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.  Now
therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the
saints, and of the household of God.  And are built upon the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone.  In
whom all the building fitly framed together grows to a holy temple in the Lord.  In
whom you also are built together for a habitation of God through the Spirit”.

Colossians 2:6-10 and 3:14-17 says “as you have therefore received Christ Jesus
the Lord, so walk you in Him.  Rooted and built up in Him, and established in the
faith, as you have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.  Beware less
any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men,
after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.  For in Him dwells all the
fullness of the Godhead bodily.  And you are complete in Him, which is the head
of all principality and power.  Above all these things put on charity, which is the
bond of perfectness.  And let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom,
teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.  And whatsoever you do in word or
deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father
by Him”.

Jesus taught that believers should build their faith on the strong foundation of
practicing His teachings (Matthew 7:24-27) “therefore, whosoever hears these
sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, which built his
house upon a rock.  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the wins
blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not for it was founded upon a rock.
And every one that hears these sayings of Mine, and does them not, shall be
likened to a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand.  And the rain
descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house;
and it fell; and great was the fall of it”.

Jesus explains how we need to stay connected to Him (John 15:1-8) “I am the true
vine, and My Father is the vine dresser.  Every branch in Me that bears not fruit,
He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He purges it, that it may bring
forth more fruit.  Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken to you.
Abide in Me, and I in you; as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide
in the vine; no more can you, except you abide in Me.  I am the vine, you are the
branches, he that abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit; for
without Me you can do nothing.  If a man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a
branch, and is withered and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and
they are burned.  If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you shall ask
what you will, and it shall be done to you.  Herein is My Father glorified, that you
bear much fruit; so shall you be My disciples”.

The apostle Paul refers to Christ as a foundation for believers (I Corinthians 3:9-
14) “for we are laborers together with God; you are God’s garden, you are God’s
building.  According to the grace of God which is given to me; as a wise master
builder, I have laid the foundation, and another builds thereon, but let every man
take heed how he builds thereupon.  For other foundation can no man lay than
that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.  Now if any man build upon this foundation gold,
silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble.  Every man’s work shall be made
manifest; for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the
fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.  If any man’s work abide which he
has built thereupon, he shall receive a reward”.

The apostle Paul instructs Timothy in I Timothy 6:17-19 “charge them that are rich
in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the
living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.  That they do good, that they be
rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate.  Laying up in store
for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold
of eternal life”.  Also in II Timothy 2:19-21 it says “nevertheless the foundation of
God stands sure, having this seal, the Lord knows them that are His, and, let
every one that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.  But in a great
house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of
earth; and some to honor, and some to dishonor.  If a man therefore purge
himself from these, he shall be a vessel of honor, sanctified, and fit for the master’
s use, and prepared to every good work”.

Be sure that what foundation you are on will show; Jesus said we will be known by
our fruit (Matthew 7:13-21) “enter you in at the strait gate; for wide is the gate,
and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in
thereat.  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads to life, and
few there be that find it.  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s
clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.  You shall all know them by their
fruits.  Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?  Even so every god
tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit.  A good tree
cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.  Every
tree that brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Wherefore, by their fruit, you shall know them.  Not every one that says to Me,
Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of My
Father which is in heaven”.

Jesus explains the difference (John 8:41-44) “you do the deeds of your father.
Then said they to Him, we be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even
God.  Jesus said to them, if God were your Father, you would love Me; for I
proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of Myself, but He sent Me.
Why do you not understand, My speech?  Even because you cannot hear My
word.  You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do, he
was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is
no truth in him.  When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar, and
the father of it”.

The apostle John writes in I John 3:7-10 “little children, let no man deceive you, he
that does righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.  He that commits
sin is of the devil; for the devil sinned from the beginning  For this purpose the
Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
Whosoever is born of God does not commit sin; for His seed remains in him, and
he cannot sin, because he is born of God.  In this the children of God are
manifest, and the children of the devil; whosoever does not righteousness is not
of God, neither he that loves not his brother”.

Ephesians 5:14-20 gives good advise; it says “wherefore He says, awake you that
sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.  See then that you
walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise.  Redeeming the time, because the
days are evil.  Wherefore be you not unwise, but understanding what the will of
the Lord is.  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the
Spirit.  Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing
and making melody in your heart to the Lord.  Giving thanks always for all things
to God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”.
