Jesus’ Purpose for Coming
Our text comes from Rom 6:3-8.
Salvation comes from the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Jesus was resurrected to make us one! (John 17:11-24)
Jesus didn’t come into the world to die for Himself, He died for us (I Tim 2:6). His death
was for the purpose of us being unified in one body.
All human beings are born selfish, in the nature, in their minds they are going to live for
themselves. Jesus came to short circuit our human thinking that we might start
operating by the thinking of the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s why it is necessary to have
the mind of Christ (I Cor 2:9-16). So you are no longer focusing on yourself, but, you
are thinking the way Jesus Christ is. Those WWJD bracelets have the right idea
It is through His death that we become one with Him, when we put to death the old man
and we are buried with the Lord Jesus Christ and resurrected to a new life. The Bible
says, “Jesus was the first fruits of them that resurrected from the dead for Jesus
Christ” They are resurrected in the same manner, that Jesus Christ was resurrected
(Rom 8:11). You are no longer an independent person from the Lord, once you get
saved. That’s why Paul was able to say in salvation there is no more I (II Cor 5:14-17;
Gal 2:20).
The moment you become one with Christ you no longer exist (You are dead). You are
not your own now; you can’t make decisions the way you want to do. Jesus Christ gave
His life for us that He would make us new. Now, it is impossible for human beings to do
what is right, you can not serve God through any kind of human effort. The scripture
tells us, “He that is in the flesh cannot please God” (Rom 8:8). We can not serve God
as a human being.
We are supposed to become spiritual; walking in the Spirit, in the Mind of God, in the
Word of God (Gal 5:16). Jesus came to show us that even though they abused Him,
mistreated Him; He did no wrong.
The scripture says, “He did not sin, neither was guile found in His mouth”. He was not
made bitter by it. We are not to deal with things according to our natural human
understanding (Prov 3:5), because our human understanding is always going to lead
us back to the operation of what is fleshly, because that is the nature of human
beings. We are not to react the way we did before we got saved. The only thing that
changes how you were born is being put to death and being born again. You become
one with the Lord Jesus Christ (Eph 5:30-32). That is why the devil tries so hard to
break up marriages.
Because of your union to Him, when you are united to Him by baptized into His death,
then you are resurrected to walk in newness of life (II Cor 5:17) The scripture says
“those that are baptized into Christ have to put on Christ (Rom 13:14). He that is
joined with Christ becomes one spirit (I Cor 6:16-17). The body of Christ must all
operate in the same mind set. The problems in life come that we may be strong in the
Lord, not in your flesh. Your strength is in the Spirit of God. We operate now in the
power and the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One that delivered us, He
is the One that united us into the body of Christ that we would be one with Him, that we
can live now to glorify Him (John 17:10). We must walk in the Spirit. The Lord
delivered us from living after our human understanding that we might live by the power
of God. In Him we live, move and have our being. (Acts 17:28, Phil 4:13).
The present work of Christ begins with His exaltation by God, after the completion of
His finished work in His death and resurrection. The first aspect of His present work
was the sending of the Holy Spirit to dwell in His people (John 16:7). The fulfillment of
this promise was announced by Peter on the day of Pentecost. “Therefore being
exalted to the right hand of
God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit. He poured
out this which you now see and hear” (Acts 2:33).
The present work of Christ that receives the main emphasis in the New Testament is
His intercession. Paul quoting what appears to be an early Christian confession of
faith, spoke of “Christ died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand
of God, who also makes intercession for us.” (Rom 8:34).
So too the writer to the Hebrews says that “He ever lives to make intercession” for His
people (Heb 7:25).
He describes in detail Jesus’ exceptional qualifications to be their high priest. Jesus’
presence with God as His people’s representative provides the assurance that their
requests for spiritual help are heard and granted. To know that He is there is a
powerful incentive for His followers. No good thing that Jesus seeks for them is
withheld by the Father.
Abide in Him, by abiding in His Word (John 15:7-8).
