Hearing from God

God came down in the cool of the day to talk with Adam (Gen 3:8-9)  God spoke to Noah
and he obeyed and built the ark.  God spoke to Abram (Gen 12:1-4)  God spoke to
Moses through a burning bush.  Moses was told to consecrate the people, so God could
speak with them. (Ex 20:1,18-22).  Solomon prayed and heard from God (I King 3:5-14)
what Solomon asked was for a hearing and understanding heart.  Hearken is used many
times through out the Bible, it means hearing and obey, hear and do.

Jesus said many times “he that has ears let him hear”.  In Matt 4:4 Jesus said “man shall
not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
Jesus said “for every one that asks receives, and he that seeks finds…” (Luke 11:9-13).

God wants to talk to us too. (Ex 5:26, Duet 5:24, 28:1-2)  Jesus said “My sheep they
hear My voice” (John 10:3-5, 27,18:37,Heb 3:7,15,4:7,10:25, Rev 3:20)

Jesus said “The Holy Spirit shall teach you what you ought to say” (Luke 12:12, John 14:
26, 16:13).

We see that God has been speaking from Genesis to Revelation.  We have to be
receptive to hear.

Prayer is supposed to be communication with God, (all communication is a two way
street, talking and listening). But people do all the talking.  The most important phrase of
prayer is listening.  Remember that everyone that ask receives.  When we are around
people who talk all the time and not give you a chance to speak, we get upset with
them.  Well, people do that to God all the time and say they are praying.  Prayer is a two
way street, we must seek to open our heart and hear what God wants to say to us.
Remember He knows everything and one word from God could chance our life.

I am practicing to hear God more and I came across some ways to turn in to God.

1.        Make time to spend with God. – make an appointment to speak to God daily and
keep it.  A lot of things will try to distract you, but press on. (Lukr 10:4).
2.        Take a note pad with you and listen for God to speak, expect it.  I found that
when I ask direct questions of God, I get  more answers.  The devil will try to get you to
stop praying by bringing something to mind that needs to be done, use the pad to note
these things without interrupting your prayer time.
3.        Disciple yourself and value silence.  God said, “be still and know that I am God
(Ps 46:10).  God speaks in a still small voice, He speaks through people, He speaks
audible.  When God speaks He never goes against the written word, that’s how you can
check the voice you heard by making the Bible the final authority.  Expect God to speak
to you, He wants to.  Remember Jesus said the Spirit will tell us all things.
4.        Live with an expectation to hear from God.  Expect to hear from Him, stay
plugged into the Holy Spirit.  If you don’t believe He will speak to you, you won’t hear.
5.        Keep it simple.  Ask direct questions. Don’t go to Him with a shopping list, but with
open ears.  So you will know when you receive your answer.  God is a Spirit and He will
speak to your spirit, your inner-man. (I Cor 6:L17).
6.        Reject the fear of failure.  God wants you to learn, so try.  Just like a child who is
learning to walk will fall down many times, before he gets it.  So try and if you fall down
get back up, until you get it.  God will get your attention if you get off track.
7.        Don’t put God in a box.  God can speak in many ways, just learn how He speaks
to you.  Spend time with Him and let Him speak to you.  Remember Faith cometh by
hearing (Rom 10:17).

Isa 26:3 says “ You will keep them in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You
because he trust in You”.  When you delight yourself in the Lord, God speaks to you by
your desire (Ps 37:4).  You must know God’s words – satan will never minister anything
to you that compares to the Word.  The Holy Spirit will only tell you what Jesus has said.
