Getting Understanding

Understanding means - to know absolutely, have clear knowledge of

When you read the Bible, you have to be careful to read it in its context.  Many
times you hear people say “God’s ways are not our ways”.  Let us examine this to
see if it is the whole truth.  Let us see where it is noted and see the proper context
(Isaiah 55:7-11) “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his
thoughts; and let him return to the Lord Yahweh, and He will have mercy upon
him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.  For My thoughts are not your
thoughts, neither, are your ways My ways, says the Lord Yahweh.  For as the
heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and
My thoughts than your thoughts.  For as the rain comes down, and the snow from
heaven, and return not there, but waters the earth, and makes it bring forth and
bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater.  So shall My word
be that goes forth out of My mouth, it shall not return to Me void; but it shall
accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it”.
God is talking to the wicked, not the saints.  In I Corinthians 2:9-13 says “But as it
is written, eye has not seen nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of
man, the things which God, has prepared for them that love Him.  But God has
revealed them to us by His Spirit, for the Spirit searches, all things, yea, the deep
things of God.  For what man knows the things of a man, save the spirit of man
which is in him?  Even so the things knows no man, but the Spirit of God.  Now we
have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, that we
might know the things that are freely given to us of God.  Which things also we
speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit
teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual”.  Verse 10 shows us that God
has revealed them to us by His Spirit.  In verse 14 it explains that “the natural man
receives not the things of the Spirit of God for they are foolishness to him, neither
can he know them, because they are spiritual discerned”.  In Romans 8:5-8 the
Bible shows us the difference between the natural man and the spiritual man; it
says “for they that are after the flesh, do mind the things of the flesh, burt they
that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.  For to be carnally minded is death,
but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is enmity
against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.  So
then they that are in the flesh can-not please God”.

Jesus said, “to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to
others in parables, that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not
understand” (Matthew 13:11, Mark 4:11, Luke 8:1).  Paul proclaims “Whereof I am
made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for
you, to fulfill the word of God.  Even the mystery which has been hid from ages
and from generations, but now is made manifest to His saints.  To whom God
would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the
Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:25-27).

Proverbs 2:1-2,6-7 “My son, if you will receive my words, and hide my
commandments with you.  So that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your
heart to understanding…For the Lord Yahweh gives wisdom out of His mouth
comes knowledge and understanding.  He lays up sound wisdom for the
righteous.  He is a buckler to them that walk uprightly”.  Again in Proverbs 4:7 it
says “Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom and with all your getting
get understanding”.  Getting understanding is our responsibility, we are told to
“study to show ourselves approved” (II Timothy 2:15 ); II Timothy 3:16-17 “All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness.  That the man of God may be
perfect, thoroughly furnished to all good works”.

“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so
that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” (Hebrews 11:
3).  Remember that “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God”.
That’s why the natural man can not understand the things of God, because they
don’t live by faith.

When God created man (Genesis 1:26) He made man in His image and His
likeness.  God created all things with His words (Genesis 1:3-24) it says over and
over “and God said, and God saw”, man being in His image and likeness creates
things with their words too (Matthew 12:35) “A good man out of the good treasure
of the heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure
brings forth evil things”.

The Bible tells us in I Corinthians 2:16 “But we have the mind of Christ”.  It doesn’t
say we will get the mind of Christ, we have to believe the Bible and think of these
things.  The key to getting understanding is renewing our minds to the word of
God as we are told in Romans 12:1-2.  We are to “seek those things which are
above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God.  Set your affection on things
above not on things of the earth.  For you are dead, and your life is hid with Christ
in God”.   Remember what God told Joshua in Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law
shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate therein day and night
that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein, for then you
shall make your way prosperous and then you shall have good success”.
