A healthy fear is reverence or respect. The Bible teaches that children are to
respect their parents (Lev. 19:3), wives are to respect their husbands (Eph 5:
33), and slaves are to respect their masters (Eph 6:5). The Scriptures also
declare that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge”. (Prov 1:7)
as well as “the beginning of wisdom” (Prov. 9:10). “ His name” (Ps 111:9)
Godly fear (Gen 42:18, Deut 13:4, Heb 12:9, 28) stand in awe (Ps 4:4, Ps
33:8, Ps 119:161) honor (Ps 96:6, John 5:23, I Tim 1:17)
The early church had a godly fear, however, after Ananias & Sapphira (Acts
5:1-11) a greater fear came on the church.
A harmful fear is a sense of terror or dread. Believers are instructed not to
fear many times in the Bible; (Ps 23:4, Is 41:10) fear and faith can not work
at the same time.- fear is of satan and faith is of God. When fear comes (Ps
56:3) meditate on the word. (Ps 64:1-2, Ps 118:4-6) Believers are
instructed not to fear human beings (Matt 10:28, Phil 1:28, Rev 12:11),
because they can not ultimately harm us. On the other hand, the
unbeliever has every reason to be panic-stricken at thoughts of God, for he
stands condemned before Him (Matt 10:28, John 3:18). And yet, this kind of
fear of God does not often lead to repentance. It normally leads to a feeble,
attempt to hide from God. (Gen 3:8, Rev 6:15-17) or worse, to a denial of
God’s existence and His claim on a person’s life (Ps 14:1, Rom 1:18-28).
