Eternal Life
Means - always, advanced, substantially, everlasting, forever, present or future, without
end, distinguished, vitality, higher, indefinitely, splendor, confidence, victory,
continually. Zoe in Greek means – living like God, God kind of life. Eternal life gives
meaning to life. We enter into it by (faith) that’s why God said the just shall live by faith.
We receive eternal life as a free gift. ‘The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.” (Rom 6:23).
Our inheritance doesn’t start when we die, but it started when Jesus died and the will
(Bible) was read, and taken by faith. Remember we are heirs of God and joint heirs with
Jesus. We are heirs of the blessings of Abraham. (Gal 3:29).
Adam lived in “paradise”, he lacked nothing until he fell into sin; we have been
redeemed and restored, to how Adam was before the fall.
Old Testament will #1 – God brought Israel out and not one feeble (a description of
persons who are weak or exalted) one was with them. (Ps 105:37, 43-44). They lived a
life which others envied until they turned from God. (Ps 1, 23, Ps 115:12-16)
New Testament will #2 - Eternal life – a person’s new and redeemed existence in Jesus
Christ that is granted by God as a gift to all believers.
Eternal life refers to the quality or character of our new existence in Christ as well as the
unending character of that life. The idea of eternal life is implied by the prophets in
their picture of the glorious future promised to God’s people (Isa 60:15-18).
God wants to see us living in the kingdom right here on earth. When we pray the Lord’s
Prayer, we see God wants His Kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven. (Matt 6:10).
Paul prayed for the Ephesians to know the inheritance in the saints. (Eph 1:16-18).
Jesus made it clear that eternal life comes only to those who make a total commitment to
Him (Luke 18:18-30). Paul says it this way (Rom 5:21, Gal 6:8).
The phrase “eternal life” appears most often in the Gospel of John and the epistle of I
John emphasizes eternal life as the present reality and possession of the believers
(John 3:36, I John 5:13-15). John declares that the believer has already begun to
experience the blessings of the future even before their fullest expression:
We can live a full and meaningful life right now: Jesus said “I have come that you may
have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). When you become born again
you enter into eternal life.
Eternal life means more than eternal existence (Dan 12:2), everyone will life forever
somewhere. Eternal life refers to eternal fellowship with God. “This is eternal life” Jesus
declared “that they may know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You have
sent.” (John 17:1-3).
Eternal life is the highest quality of life. According to the apostle Paul, it is freedom from
sin, holiness, and a positive relationship with God. This is in contrast to spiritual death
which results from a life of sin (Rom 6:21-23).
Eternal life comes through faith in Jesus Christ. He taught “He who believes in Me has
everlasting life (John 6:47). This symbolic meaning of life appears frequently in the
Gospel of John. Of Jesus, John wrote, “In Him was life and the life was the light of men”
(John 1:9,14).
