Establishing Your Confidence
Having confidence is having a firm belief in God’s word (I John 5:14-15) “and
this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to
His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we
know that we have the petition that we desired of Him”.
Trusting God that, He will do what He has said; having confidence makes you
bold to step out on His word. The Bible tells us many times “trust in the Lord
Yahweh” (Proverbs 3:5-6), says “trust in the Lord Yahweh will all your heart, and
lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He
shall direct your paths”.
David is a good example, after his town was burned and all of their families were
taken, the men with him wanted to stone him, but David encouraged himself in
the Lord Yahweh (I Samuel 30:8) “and David enquired at the Lord Yahweh
saying, shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them? And He answered
him, pursue, for you shall surely overtake them, and without fail recover all”.
We build confidence in Him, by meditating on His word and by realizing that He
will never leave us or forsake us. Actually lack of confidence is dangerous
(Hebrews 11:6), “but without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he that
comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that
diligently seek Him”. James warns us not to be double minded (James 1:5-8) “if
any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and
upbraids not; and it shall be given him. but let him ask in faith, nothing
wavering, for he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and
tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A
double minded man is unstable in all his ways”.
Confidence grows out of our reliance upon God; self-sufficiency is an enemy
when it causes us to believe we can always do what needs to be done in our
own strength. To prevent this attitude among Gideon’s soldiers, God reduced
their number from thirty-two thousand to three hundred. With an army this
small, there could be no doubt that victory was from God (Judges 7). Like
Gideon, we must recognize the danger of fighting in our own strength. We can
be confident of victory only if we put our confidence in God and not ourselves.
We have to become fully persuaded in the promises of God, to receive and walk
in them. Abraham became fully persuaded (Hebrews 11:17-19) “by faith
Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac and he that had received the
promises offered up his only begotten son. Of whom it was said, that in Isaac
shall your seed be called. Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even
from the dead; from where also he received him in a figure”.
The Bible tells us many times where we are to get confidence (Psalms 118:8-
12), “it is better to trust in the Lord Yahweh than to put confidence in man. It is
better to trust in the Lord Yahweh than to put confidence in princes. All nations
compassed me about; but in the name of the Lord Yahweh will I destroy them.
They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about; but in the name of
the Lord Yahweh I will destroy them. They compassed me about like bees; they
are quenched as the fire of thorns; for in the name of the Lord Yahweh I will
destroy them”. In Proverbs 3:25-26 says “be not afraid of sudden fear, neither
of the desolation of the wicked, when it comes. For the Lord Yahweh shall be
your confidence, and shall keep your foot from being taken”. In Proverbs 14:26-
27 tells us “In the reverence of the Lord Yahweh is strong confidence and his
children shall have a place of refuge. The reverence of the Lord Yahweh is a
fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death”.
Confidence in God means a new perspective on life’s problems (Philippians 4:6-
9) says “be careful for nothing, but in every things by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. and the peace of
God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through
Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things
honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever
things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue,
and if thee be any praise, think on these things. Those things which you have
both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do and the God of
peace shall be with you”.
Confidence is required in Christ’s service (I John 2:28) “and now, little children,
abide in Him, that, when He shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be
ashamed before Him at His coming”. We have to hang on to our confidence (I
John 3:19-22) “and hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure
our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our
heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we
confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because
we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight”.
We are told to hold on to our confidence (Hebrews 3:6,12-14), “but Christ as a
son over His own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence
and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. Take heed, brethren, less there
be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But
exhort one another daily, while it is called today; less any of you be hardened
through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold
the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end”.
In Hebrews 6:9-12 the Bible says “but beloved, we are persuaded better things
of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. For God is
not unrighteous to forget your work, and labor of love, which you have showed
toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And
we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence to the full
assurance of hope to the end. That you be not slothful, but followers of them
who through faith and patience inherit the promises”.
In Hebrews 10:35-36, it says “cast not away therefore your confidence, which
has great recompence of reward. For you have need of patience, that after you
have done the will of God, you might receive the promise”.
Paul preached Jesus with confidence (Acts 28:28-31) “be it known therefore to
you, that the salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had great reasoning
among themselves. And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and
received all that came in to him. Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching
those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no man
forbidding him”.
Paul acknowledges that he was made a minister to preach among the Gentiles
the unsearchable riches of Christ (Ephesians 3:9-19) “and to make all men see
what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world has
been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ. To the intent that now
to the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the
church the manifold wisdom of God. According to the eternal purpose which, He
purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. In whom we have boldness and access with
confidence by the faith of Him. Wherefore I desire that you faint not at my
tribulations for you, which is your glory. For this cause I bow my knees to the
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth
is named. That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be
strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man. That Christ may dwell in
your hearts by faith, that you, being rooted and grounded in love. May be able
to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and
height. And to know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge, that you might
be filled with all the fullness of God”.
Paul prayed for the Ephesians, and this is a prayer that we also can pray for
others and for ourselves.
Confidence is a gift of God’s Spirit. Paul’s confidence was not in his keen
intellect or speaking ability but in the knowledge that the Holy Spirit was helping
and guiding him. Remember that, “it is not by power, nor by might, but by My
Spirit says the Lord”.
