Duty of Man
God created mankind and placed him in the garden of Eden to tend the garden
(Genesis 1:26-28) “ and God said, let Us make man in Our image; after Our
likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl
of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping
thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the
image of God created He him; male and female created He them. And God
blessed them, and God said to them, be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the
earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the
fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth”.
The Bible tells us that God is the same yesterday, today and forever; and
because this was the original purpose for man, even though Adam fell, God
made a way to redeem mankind by the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. This restored our status (II Corinthians 5:19, 21) “to say that God was in
Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them,
and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. For He has made Him to be
sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in
Him”.
David asked God in Psalms 8:3-8 “when I consider Your heavens, the work of
Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained. What is man,
that You are mindful of him? And the son of man, that You visit him? For You
have made him a little lower than Elohim (Yourself), and have covered him with
glory and honor. And made him to have dominion over the works of Your hand;
You have put all things under his feet. All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts
of the field. The fowl of the air; and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passes
through the paths of the sea”. God has given to us dominion over the works of
His hand.
Jesus tells us in Luke 10:19 “behold, I give to you power to tread on serpents
and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any
means hurt you”.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 says “let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter; fear
(reverence) God and keep His commandments; for this is the whole duty of
man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing,
whether it be good, or whether it be evil”. Now we know that king Solomon wrote
this, and this is the same Solomon that when asked of God what he wanted, he
said “wisdom”, and God made him wiser that all mankind.
Deuteronomy 6:1-9 God established the great commandment, it says “now
these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord
Yahweh your God commanded to teach you, that you might do them in the land
where you go to possess it. That you might fear the Lord Yahweh your God, to
keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I command you, you, and
your son, and your son’s son, all the days of your life, and that your days may
be prolonged. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well
with you, and that you may increase mightily, as the Lord God o your fathers
has promised you, in the land that flows with milk and honey. Hear, O Israel; the
Lord Yahweh our God is one Lord. And you shall love the Lord Yahweh your
God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And
these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart. And you
shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in
your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lay down, and when
you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall
be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the post of
your house, and on your gates”.
God’s eternal purpose for His creatures are manifold.. Since the fall of man, His
redemptive purposes are accomplished primarily in those who have been
saved. His purpose for man can be seen often by biblically commanded duties.
Love God sums up man’s duty to God in words given the highest reverence
through the ages in Scripture (Matthew 22:37-40) Jesus was being asked “which
is the great commandment in the law? And Jesus said to him “you shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like to it, you shall
love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law
and the prophets”.
Love one another, Christ endorsed this as the great commandment of man’s
duty to God. He also showed that this first great commandment implied a
second. This was not a new purpose in the mind of God for mankind, since He
had already given the Ten Commandments on two tablets of stone
(Deuteronomy 5:22). While commandments one through four stood for man’s
duties toward God, commandments five through ten stood for man’s duties to
his fellowman.
He also says that we have joy (Psalms 16:11), the psalmist said “in Your
presence is fullness of joy”; Christ wished for His disciples (John 16:24) “that
your joy may be full”. This joy, however, comes from being in God’s place of
blessing and in doing His will (Psalms 40:8).
To glorify God (Psalms 50:13) “and call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will
deliver you, and you shall glorify Me”.
To worship Him in holiness (Psalms 86:9-10) “all nations whom You have made
shall come and worship before You, O Lord; and shall Your name. For You are
great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God”. worship incorporates
adoration, submission, sincere praise, and a concurrence of the heart, soul,
and mind of the One being worshipped.
To subdue the earth; Genesis 1:26-28, this was God’s original plan for mankind.
To love and honor the Son as the Father (John 5:22-23) “for the Father judges
no man, but has committed all judgment to the Son. That all men should honor
the Son, even as they honor the Father, He that honors not the Son, honors
not the Father, which has sent Him”.
To be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:14-20) “wherefore He says; awake you
that sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light. See then
that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise. Redeeming the time;
because the days are evil. Wherefore be you not unwise, but understanding
what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but
be filled with the Spirit. Speaking to yourselves, in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Giving
thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God”.
Good news is that as we accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the
Holy Spirit comes into our heart. This is a promise of God, that He would create
a new heart within us, a heart that is pliable to obeying God (Galatians 5:16-
18,25) “this I say then, walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the
flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the spirit against the flesh; and
these are contrary the one to the other; so that you cannot do the things that
you would. But if you be led of the Spirit, you are not under the law. If we live in
the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit”.
