Deceiving Your Own Selves
Many people fall into deception when they get their instructions for live
from any source other than the Bible (James 1:13-17, 22-26) “let no man
say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God, for God cannot be tempted
with evil, neither tempts He any man. But every man is tempted, when he
is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust has
conceived, it brings forth sin, and sin, when it is finished, brings forth
death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and
every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights,
with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. But be you
doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if
any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like to a man beholding
his natural face in a glass. For he beholds himself, and goes his way, and
immediately forgets what manner of man he was. But whoso looks into the
perfect law of liberty, and continues therein, he being not a forgetful
hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If
any man among you seem to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but
deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is vain”.
I Corinthians 3:18 says “let no man deceive himself, if any may among you
seems to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be
wise”. Remember that wisdom comes from God. many blame the devil for
what they do wrong, but we are the ones who makes the choice. The devil
cannot make anyone do anything, he has no power over people.
God says “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you
have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shall be no priest
to Me; seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget
your children” (Hosea 4:6). Many people quote the first part of that
scripture “My people perish for lack of knowledge”, but the reasons are
that they reject knowledge. God has given us the Bible as our instruction
manual (Romans 15:4) “for whatsoever things were written aforetime were
written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the
scriptures might have hope”. Also in II Timothy 3:15-17 it says “and that
from a child you have known the holy scriptures which are able to make
you wise to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is
given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be
perfect, thoroughly furnished to all good works”.
The Bible tells us that it is pride of our hearts that deceives us (Obadiah 1:
3-4) and this is God speaking to us, it says “the pride of your heart has
deceived you, you that dwells in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is
high, that says in his heart, who shall bring me down to the ground.
Though you exalt yourself as the eagle, and though you set your nest
among the stars, from there will I bring you down, says the Lord Yahweh”.
Pride is one of the things that God hates.
Paul warns many times for us to be not ignorant (Romans 11:25) “for I
would not, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, less you
should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to
Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in”. Also in (II Corinthians
1:8 and I Thessalonians 4:13).
We are told in Galatians not to be deceived, in Galatians 6:3-4, 7-9 it says
“for if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he
deceives himself. But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he
have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. Be not deceived, God
is not mocked, for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. For he
that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to
the Spirit, shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary
in well doing for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not”.
Jesus warns us in Matthew 7:21-27 “not every one that says to Me Lord,
Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of
My Father which is in heaven. many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord,
have we not prophesied in Your name? And in Your name done many
wonderful works? And then will I profess to them, I never knew you; depart
from Me, you that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever hears these sayings
of Mine, and does them, I will liken as a wise man, which built his house
upon a rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds
blew and beat upon that house, and it fell not; for it was founded upon a
rock. And everyone that hears these sayings of Mine, and does them not;
shall be likened to a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand.
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and
beat upon that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it”. So you see
that there will be people who deceive themselves to thing that they have a
right into the kingdom, even if they refuse to obey Him.
You hear people saying that God is a God of love, so He will not send ay
body to hell. The truth is that they make their choices and they will reap
the consequences of their own choice.
The devil takes the deceived and tries to keep them blind (II Corinthians 4:
3-4) “but if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost. In whom the
god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not, less the
light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should
shine to them”. Yet we are told to resist the devil and he will flee from us
(James 4:7). I Corinthians 6:9-10 says “know you not that the unrighteous
shall not inherit the kingdom of God? be not deceived, neither fornicators,
nor idolaters, nor adulterers, not effeminate, nor abusers of themselves
with mankind. Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God”.
We are told to examine ourselves (Lamentations 3:40) “let us search and
try our ways, and turn again to the Lord Yahweh”. II Corinthians 13:5 says
“examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; prove your own selves.
Know you not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except you
be reprobates”?
The biggest deception is that you are only human, when a person comes
to Jesus, the Holy Spirit moves in the inside of him, and he becomes a new
creature, and can do all things through Christ who strengthens him.
