Commitment
Roll together, yield, surrender, serve, submit, trust, commend, abide, agree, respect,
entrust, dedicate oneself – in which a person or a thing is set aside or consecrated to
God’s service.
As you read II Tim 1:12-14, we see there are steps to being committed
1. Believe – to place one’s trust in God’s truth, one who takes God at His Word,
and trust in Him for salvation. Believers are those who have trusted God with their will
as well as their mind (Jon 8:31-32, Rom 3:22).
2. Know – the state of being assured. It refers to the believers full confidence and
conviction that the penalty of their sins has been paid in full, that heaven has been
secured as their eternal destiny by Christ’s death and resurrection.
3. Persuaded – we don’t start out being persuaded, remember faith comes by
hearing and hearing the Word of God. The Bible has to become the final authority in
our lives. The Bible tells us to be careful what we hear, because what we hear goes
into our heart. The Bible tells us to guard our heart, for out of it (your heart) are the
issues of life (Prov 4:23) it also says “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth
speaks (Matt 12:34). Remember our persuasion is not in our own ability, but that God
is able to work it in us (Heb 13:20-21). We must be empty, so God can fill us (Eph 5:
19). Paul says “being confidence in this very thing, that He which has begun a good
work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Phil 1:6).
4. Commitment – dedicate ourselves to God. When we submit ourselves to God,
we submit to the Word of God. Remember God exalts the humble (James 4:7-8, I Pet 5:
6-8). God has delivered us from the kingdom of darkness and has translated us into
the kingdom of His dear Son. (Col 1:13) and tells us we serve the Lord Christ (Col 3:24,
I Tim 6:20). Jesus did the legal side, we must do the vital side by belief and confession.
A lot of people want Jesus as Savior, to deliver them from a fiery hell, but it’s when we
commit ourselves to God, He becomes our Lord. Jesus said, “why call me Lord and do
not the things I say” (Luke 6:46). Paul tells us in Gal 5:16 :”this, I say then, walk in the
Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Walking in the Spirit is living by the
Word of God. Committing to do what God says. In Rom 12:1-2 we see by presenting
our bodies a living sacrifice and letting the Word renew our minds, commitments begins.
In II Cor 5:17-21 God reconciled us to Himself.
God tells us what to commit to: (Duet 30:19 - choosing life, apposed to sin in John 8:
34, I John 3:4-9).
David in Psalms 31:1-5 shows us commitment is a free will gift, we can give to God. It’s
our choice. In Psalms 37:3-7 shows us the benefits of our commitment; as well as Prov
3:1-8, and 16:3,7.
