A Literal Hell
Many people don’t believe in a literal hell, but that shouldn’t influence you, you have
to make the Bible the final authority in your decision.
Through out the centuries many have tried to by force, go get people to deny Jesus;
but Jesus warns us not to be afraid of man, in Matthew 10:28, Jesus says “fear not
them which kill the body; but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear Him which is
able to destroy both soul and body in hell”.
Jesus warns us to turn away from sin by repentance. Teaching us in Mark 9:43-48
“and if your hand offend you, cut it off, it is better for you to enter into life maimed
than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched.
Where their worm dies not and the fire is not quenched. And if your foot offend you,
cut it off, it is better for you to enter lame into life, than having two feet to be cast
into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched. Where their worm dies not, and
the fire is not quenched. And if your eye offend you, pluck it out; it is better for you t
enter into the kingdom of God, with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into
hell fire. Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched”. We have a
responsibility to bring our flesh into submission to God (II Corinthians 10:4-5) “for
the weapons of our warfare are not canal, but mighty through God to the pulling
down of strong holds. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts
itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the
obedience of Christ”.
Death of the body is not our final destiny; there are only two destinies, for the ones
who are written in the Lamb’s book of life “everlasting life”, Heaven; and for the one
not written there, “everlasting punishment” Hell (Daniel 12:2) says “and many of
them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and
some to shame, and everlasting punishment”.
Hell is the final destiny of those who do not put their faith in Jesus Christ and His
grace. Hell is described by images such as a furnace of fire, eternal fire, eternal
punishment (Matthew 3:42,50; 25:41,46); outer darkness, the place of weeping and
torment; he lake of fire, the second death; a place which was made for the devil and
his demons (Matthew 25:41) “then shall He (Jesus) say also to them on the left
hand, depart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and
his angels”.
God didn’t make hell for mankind, remember that He doesn’t want any to perish but
to come to the knowledge of the truth (Deuteronomy 30:19-20) says “I call heaven
and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death,
blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live.
That you may love the Lord Yahweh your God, and that you may obey His voice,
and that you may cling to Him; for He is your life, and the length of your days; that
you may dwell in the land which the Lord Yahweh swear to your fathers, to Abraham,
to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them”.
Those in hell experience everlasting separation from God, never to see the glory of
His power (II Thessalonians 1:6-9) “seeing it is a righteous thing with God to
recompense tribulation to them that trouble you. And to you who are troubled rest
with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels.
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the
gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction
from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power”
There is no hint anywhere of the termination of the terrible state of unbelievers in
hell. Their doom is unending; there is a solemn finality about their miserable
condition. Some of the most descriptive and conclusive utterance about hell comes
from the lips of Jesus.
Many would say, how can a loving God send people to an everlasting hell? It must
be replied that God does not choose this destination for people; they freely choose
it for themselves. God simply concurs in their self-chosen way and reveals the full
consequences of their evil choice. I just read you Deuteronomy 30:19.
It is difficult for us to understand the righteous judgment of a holy God who, on one
hand, hates all evil, yet, on the other hand, loves the evildoers enough to sacrifice
His only Son for their salvation from sin (John 3:16-18) “for God, so loved the world,
that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not
perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to
condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. He that believes
in Him is not condemned; but he that believes not is condemned already, because
he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God”.
Diving wrath is the necessary reaction of a holy God who hates all that is contrary to
His righteous nature. When the only remedy for human sin is rejected and all
appeals of a loving seeking God for the reconciliation of rebellious sinners are
refused, there is no other course of action that God Himself can pursue, but to leave
the sinner to his self-chosen destiny.
When the sinner ultimately resists and rejects the work of the Holy Spirit whereby he
is convicted of sin, there remains no more possibility of repentance or salvation; he
has committed an eternal sin, which deserves eternal punishment.
Hell is eternal punishment. The Bible is our rule of faith for the doctrine of hell,
however difficult the doctrine may seem for natural reason or for human sentiment.
Scripture leaves no doubt about the terrible nature and eternal duration of hell.
Punishment for sin is a persistent teaching of the Bible. The doctrine of judgment is
as extensive as the canon itself from Genesis, in Genesis 2:17 it says “but the tree
of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it; for in the day that you eat
thereof you shall surely die”; to the final destination as in Revelation 20:11-15 “and I
saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the
heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead,
small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened and another book
was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged out of those things
which were written in the books according to their works. And the sea gave up the
dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them;
and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were
cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found
written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire”.
The body which at death return to dust, awaiting resurrection. The non material
self, which if regenerated goes to Paradise, Heaven. Yet, if not the abodes of the
wicked dead, goes to hell.
